Hopatcong, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. Hopatcong is part of the Paterson, NJ-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area. The Town of Hopatcong was created on November 16, 1872 from parts of the villages of Ballston and West Milford. It was named for General James P. Hopatcong who had been killed in an engagement near Hoboken in 1862 while serving with Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War. The first post office in Hopatcong opened on December 3, 1875. The town became incorporated as a city on April 14, 1912 having achieved its goal of becoming a municipality by referendum vote held that same day. On May 2nd of that year, Mayor John Haines declared a state of emergency due to damage done to infrastructure by a fire which destroyed many homes in the town center and throughout its rural environs On February 15th 1978, Mayor Domenick Mancini announced plans to build an expressway through the heart of the town called "Hospice Highway". This project quickly met with opposition from residents who felt it would unduly impact their neighborhoods and businesses; however Mancini prevailed over his opponents and construction began soon thereafter

The borough was formed on March 14, 1921 from the portions of Union Township and North Salem Township that were merged into the new township of Hudson. The first Mayor of Hopatcong was John Hickey. The Borough of Hopatcong was granted its charter on December 12, 1922 by Governor James A. Garfield and it became an official municipality on January 1, 1923. On July 9, 1924, the Borough of Hopatcong changed its name to "Hopatcong" after Revolutionary War general George Washington's home in Fairfax County Virginia which had been abandoned for many years and had been used as a training ground for militia officers during World War I and World War II
Hopatcong was founded in 1764 by the Hopatcong Band of Indians. The town was originally called "Mantua." In 1812, it became the site of a U.S. military post during the War of 1812. It was renamed "Hopatcong" in honor of General George Washington, who had been its first commander. The town also saw significant growth after World War II as a result of the construction of Interstate 95 and other projects in the area.
