The Hopatcong Coast Guard Station was first established on September 3, 1954. The station is located in the town of Hopatcong and serves as the primary connection between the towns of Hopatcong and Newburgh. The station provides security for residents along the New Jersey shoreline and also conducts searches for lost or stranded vessels. In addition to its duties as a coast guard station, the station also holds events such as weddings, funerals, and other special occasions. The origins of the Coast Guard Station in Hopatcong date back to 1954 when it was established in response to a request from the towns of Hopatcong and Newburgh for assistance with their shared coastline. At that time, there were no barriers between these towns and so it was necessary for someone to be stationed at each location in order to provide security. Today, thanks to donations from individuals and businesses throughout New Jersey, the Coast Guard Station has grown into one of NJ’s most important assets. One of theStation’s main purposes is providing security for residents along NJ's shoreline while conducting search operations for ships that have run aground or are lost at sea. Additionally, during special occasions like weddings, funerals or other events at which public scrutiny may be desired (like Memorial Day),the Coast Guard can provide an environment free from potential disturbances by providing law enforcement officers on-scene. Hopatcong is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. Hopatcong was incorporated on February 15, 1873. The area now comprising Hopatcong was first settled by Germans in the late 17th century and included what is now the eastern portion of the borough. In 1825, a group of Dutchmen founded a community called "Hoopatecgonk" off Route 23 near present-day Hopatcong Lake. In 1837, German settlers began arriving from Pennsylvania and Delaware and built cabins along the south bank of the Susquehanna River opposite where today's Hope Presbyterian Church stands. When Philadelphia annexed Middlesex County in 1846, land east of Route 23 became part of Dunellen while much of westward extendingHopatcong remained within Middlesex County until its merger with Essex County in 1951. In 1847, residents voted to incorporate as a borough with a territory that extended from Hunters Point north to Mount Olivet and west to Hackensack Creek. On February 15, 1873, this enlarged Borough adopted its current name after it ratified an act incorporatingmuch of Newark into Bergen county under one government structure - Hopatcong Borough being two exceptions - following ratification by voters there on November 3rd. The original boundaries were:northwest corner of Boundary Street (now West Hamilton Avenue), northeast corner of Market Street (now South Orange Avenue), southeast corner of Washington Boulevard (now Broad Street), andsouthwest corner of Linden Avenue (now Princeton Avenue). On July 1st 1916 – just prior to World War I – Hopatcong opened its first post office which was located at 138 Main Street northwest side Extension No 4 later moved to 114th street between Maple Leaf Road and Vernon Place due to increased mail traffic as war mobilization increased throughout New Jersey including hopefuls registering for service overseas via post office boxes across town also businesses opened their doors during wartime providing necessary supplies such as food items needed for soldiers stationed all over America
