Highland Park is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,912 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was founded in 1868 by Scottish immigrants as part of the Paterson agglomeration. It became an incorporated municipality on April 1, 1911. The name comes from two places in Scotland: Highlanders and Park (a location near Edinburgh). The borough is bounded by Middlesex County to the north, Union County to the east, and Atlantic City to the south. Highland Park is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,752 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is bordered by Midtown to the north and east, Paramus to the south and west, Ridgewood to the northwest and Hackensack to the southwest. The first settlers in what is now Highland Park were fishermen who came from Fishkill Harbor in Ulster County. In 1824, John Hays built a cabin on Bogue Creek. By 1830, there were 8 houses in Highland Park. In 1835, Scots-Irish immigrants created a Presbyterian church and named it after their homeland of Scotland (in this case Hillsborough). The village of Highland Park was incorporated as a township on February 20th of that year. The first school was opened in Highland Park on September 10th of 1882 by Mrs. Susan Atherton with assistance from Revs Drs Cranch and Kerr. Today's high school is part of Borough High School District 214 which encompasses all but 2 miles of Highlands park including most of its annexed territory which became part of Paramus Township on April 1st 1973 when Ridgewood Township merged into Bergen County
