Highland Park is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,471 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is adjacent to Englewood Cliffs and Passaic Valley. The first settler in what is now Highland Park was James McDonnell who arrived on July 4, 1795. McDonnell's familyestead was located east of present-day Highland Park on Hackensack Creek and he named it "McDonnell's Meadow". A post office called Highlands had been established by February 12, 1802, but it closed on December 14th of that year because of the War of 1812. In 1814, David Livingston sold 5 acres (20 ha) along Hackensack Creek to John D’Arcy for $1,000. In 1821 the land was again purchased from D’Arcy by Elias Cotton who renamed it "New Scotland". At this time there were no towns in Bergen County so a new township organization took place which would later become Scotch Plains Township. On November 15th, 1824 Andrew Milligan bought 1/2 mile (0.8 km) east of what is now Dutch Village from Michael McLaughlin for $500 On October 8th of that year McLaughlin conveyed 2/3 mile (1 km) north of where Dutch Village stands to John Prentice for $100 On January 1st 1800 Samuel Mencken donated his lot south of present-day Dutch Village to form part of the current community block south of Elm Street between Maple Avenue and Neil Avenue Three years later on May 10th 1800 Abraham Douglass donated 3 lots (18 yd each) northwest corner lot number two 500 inhabitants freehold with right to an annual increase in value not exceeding three per cent each towards improvements patented by him four contiguous pieces or tracts lying within one hundred miles [from city]of Philadelphia together containing 640 acres .... These tracts were bounded NW & SE by lots numbered eighty five and seventy one respectively .... They are still owned by Douglass descendants

Today, Highland Park remains an agricultural town with a strong commercial presence due to its proximity to Interstate 95 and Route 1A/1B roads. By 1870, Highland Park had a population of about 1,500 people and it had become an important center for agricultural production. After World War II ended, Highland Park experienced significant growth as immigrants started arriving from various parts of Europe. Many businesses were established in Highland Park during this time including grocery stores, printing presses and appliance dealerships. During the 1990s and 2000s, HighlandsPark suffered significant decline due to factors such as affordable housing prices and struggling local economies. However, recent efforts by community members have led to resurgence of interest in their history and culture
