Highland Park, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. Highland Park was formed on February 20, 1873 from portions of the former township of Parsippany. The population was 12,593 at the 2010 census and 14,167 at the 2016 Census. The borough is located in the New York City metropolitan area. The first coffee house in Highland Park was established by Moses Peake and his brother-in-law John Pemberton in 1875. In 1876, Elijah Price opened the first grocery store in Highland Park with J.P. Taylor as its partner. By 1888 there were six coffeehouses operating within the boundaries of Highland Park: Price's Grocery on Market Street; George's Coffee House on Third Avenue; Applethorne Coffee House on Washington Boulevard (now Elmwood Avenue); Sunnyside Coffee House on Sunrise Boulevard; and Hammondsport Beans & Tea Company on Hammondsport Road (now Alpine Avenue). In 1893, John Fenton purchased land adjacent to what is now Weehawken High School and built a large plantation-style home known as "Fenton Manor". From this property he began to purchase land throughout Middlesex County for coffee production which would eventually be used to form part of Highland Park Township. On October 15th 1912 Fenton sold "Fenton Manor" to Rufus Ladd Jr., founder of Wernham Hogg Brewery for $2 million dollars ($ when measured against current prices). At that time Fenton had already produced over one million pounds of coffee that year alone! In 1916 Alfred Ives founded Ives Coffee Company which remains one of Highlands' most powerful commercial forces today. Over the years Ives has owned or operated more than twenty businesses including fifteen cafes/cafeterias across five boroughs – Manhattan Beach; Belle Harbor; Bricktown; Jersey City; and Hackensack – all within commuting distance of their company headquarters in Fort Lee NJ where they meet daily for breakfast meeting customers and tasting products from their wide variety of roasts and coffees blended together into unique blends called Café Alfredo / Americano blend etc.). It became an incorporated town on May 12, 1912. Highlands Park is part of the Paramus-Westwood Township district and is included in the Paramus-Westwood borough section of Westwood Village. The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1892 by Dutch immigrants who came to America to find a better life. After years of hard work and determination, they soon established themselves as one of New Jersey's most successful coffee growers and sellers. In 1916, they opened their own roasting shop - still operates today - which provided them with all the resources they needed to continue making high quality coffee for local residents and businesses alike. The Scotch-Irish settlers who founded Highland Park in 1814 had come from County Antrim, Ireland. The name "Highland Park" was given to them by General John Forbes during the American Revolution when he named an area east of Hackensack after his birthplace on the estate of Sir William Keith in Banffshire, Scotland. The first settler was James Hume (1776-1851), son of Captain James Hume of HMS "Castlemaine". He and his family began farming around 1800 on land that later became known as Frenchmans Hill Township. In 1812, the township's first elected officials were placed in office: justices of the peace George Wilkinson and Nicholas Boynton; a meeting held December 7th decided to form a village under the name "Farmington", but it never took hold because no proper building could be erected until 1820 when a frame house was erected by Alexander Davidson and others near what is now Lebanon Road and Dutch Kills Avenue. During this time period some Scotsmen also settled in Highland Park from their home country including Colonel Archibald Campbell (1795-1867) and Major General John Armstrong (1800-1872). Eventually all or most of Highland Park's original Irish immigrants left for various reasons such as political persecution back home or too much work duty on farms back home to pursue professional careers outside their homeland. Nevertheless, Gaelic culture continued to play an important role among many residents through music lessons, language classes, religious services and other activities well into the 20th century - something that can still be seen today in many aspects of life in rural areas throughout North America where Catholicism remains strong even though immigrant families are no longer dominant cultural forces. In 1840 nearly all residents living within three miles (5 km) of Dutch Kills Creek were forcibly removed by order of Governor Andrew Johnson due to polling fraudulence during an election campaign claiming vast numbers abstained from voting because they were too poor to make it past English elections! This event remain one of history's largest mass deportationations affecting American citizens which continues up until this day with ongoing efforts by advocates striving towards redress through legal processes
