Hawthorne is a town in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Combined Statistical Area. The name "Hawthorne" means "haunted house." The first settler in Hawthorne was John Hawthorne who arrived in 1772 and built a cabin on the hill overlooking the town. He named his home after his ancestor, Hawthorne Manor in England. In 1814, another pioneer named John Haworth purchased land adjacent to what is now Hawthorne and built a house known as Hawkins House. In 1836, he sold his land to Isaac Pemberton who renamed it Hawthornes Hall after himself and his son-in-law Colonel Caleb Pemberton. Hawthornes Hall was destroyed by fire in 1861 but was rebuilt Association Hall which still stands today. On April 21st 1901 residents of Hawthornes Hall formed an organization called the Pioneer League to promote agriculture and commerce in their community during its early days of development. This group helped to lay out streets and build several businesses including one store that still stands today (the current store being built by former Mayor Joseph Jaffe). In 1896 James Fenton opened a grocery store at 5th & Market Streets which became known as Fenton's Corner Store until it closed in 1984 due to neglect by its owners. In 1912 Hapgood Mills established a sawmill on White Horse Creek near present day Center Township with production continuing until 1954 when it ceased operations due to lack of demand from customers along with other mills located nearby also closing down over time leaving many local residents without employment or income for basic needs such as food and shelter during this difficult time period for our community .
