Hawthorne is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,219 at the 2010 census. The name Hawthorne originated from the Indian word "hawkeye," meaning "a sharp-pointed stone used to pierce meat." The first settler in what is now Hawthorne was James Fenton. He purchased land here in 1798 and named it after his home state of Massachusetts. In 1806, John Nicholson bought property east of present-day Hawthorne and renamed it Nicholsonstown. In 1828, Nicholas Wofford bought land west of Nicholsonstown and named it after his ancestor Sir Nicholas Wofford who had founded Worcester, England in 1272. In 1837, Washington Dixon platted the village of Hawthorne on land that he had purchased from Nicholas Wofford. The village became a Township on November 16, 1837 under the jurisdiction of Monmouth County. On July 1, 1860, the Township changed its name to Hawthorne Borough because there were no other towns within Monmouth County with that name. On November 5th, 1910 voters approved a referendum to change the town's name to honor General George Washington while he was still living in Mount Vernon (now Arlington) because there were no other towns within Monmouth County with that name either! On December 7th 1910 Gibbons Funeral Home opened as America's first funeral home with services being held at Prospect Cemetery followed by a dinner at Grosse Pointe Park before burying him at Arlington National Cemetery on December 8th! During World War II more than sixty buildings were built for military use including barracks for the Signal Corps and Post Office Department among others; many were destroyed during or after hostilities ended. Many residents moved away during this time but some remain today including Donald Trump who has resided here since 1951!

Hawthorne is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Hertfordshire, NJ-UMD Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1784, Nicholas Hawthorne settled in what is now Hawthorne Township and renamed it after himself. He was one of the first settlers in Mercer County. In 1824 he became a Justice of the Peace and also served as Selectman for many years. At that time township had only 12 inhabitants and 2 stores. By 1830 there were 26 residents and 4 stores with a total land valuation of $1,500. In 1834 Nicholas Hawthorne died leaving his estate to his son John who would continue to run it until 1840 when it passed to his daughter Sarah Jane who married John Hudson (1792-1860). During the Revolutionary War, numerous residents from Haworth fought for George Washington and their cause including James Joyner (1765-1815), Nathanael Greene (1757-1837) and Samuel Morse (1795-1847). Some are buried in nearby Spring Grove Cemetery while others are commemorated on street names such as Anthony Wayne Boulevard or Nicholas Hawthorne Boulevard which honor those whose lives were touched by this period in New Jersey's history
