The Marine Corps has a long and rich history in Hawthorne, New Jersey. The city is home to the Marine Barracks, which was built in 1907 as part of the marines' move from Quantico, Virginia. In 1924, the Marines moved into their present-day barracks on Market Street. The building served as headquarters for the brigade until 1959 when it was transferred to Camp Pendleton. In 1961, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion relocated to Hawthorne after Coronado Naval Base closed its doors. Today, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion staffs Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 3 and 4 at Rhein Main Air Station in nearby Cologne Township. Hawthorne’s connection with Marines dates back to World War I when a detachment of marines arrived here from Belle Isle Naval Hospital for training during that war. Hawthorne is located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and was founded by John Hawkins in 1764. The community was named for the Hawthorne family, who were early settlers. The first post office was established in 1807, and the population reached 1,500 in 1828. In 1865, Hawthorne became a borough within Hunterdon County. It lost its borough status in 1968 but has continued to serve as a local government area since then. There are several significant events that have occurred within Hawthorne's history. On July 15, 1794, General George Washington visited the town while on his way from Camden to Princeton; he stayed at the home of Joshua Hawley and entertained many locals with his poetry and military briefings. Additionally, on October 12 of that same year during Battle of Monmouth (1778), American general Nathanael Greene was killed while leading an attack against British forces near Hawthorne; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Battle of Trenton (December 3rd). In 1828, Hawthorne became part of new Hunterdon County when it was created from portions of Mercer and Burlington Counties. As a result of this change in jurisdictional boundaries, many businesses relocated to Hawthorne from other counties such as Morris or Union Township due to its proximity to county services and infrastructure. In 1903-04 there was also a large fire which destroyed much property within Hawthorne including most of the town center; however no injuries were reported as a result. On January 5th, 1957–8 an election took place for Borough President due to lack of candidates running for Mayor & Councilman spots; James Kapp won this election allowing him more power over affairs within Town Hall though he still reports through Borough Manager Tom Fenton Jr.. Today there are few if any residents remaining living inside the walls of what once comprised one complete township – primarily because Hawthorne has experienced rapid growth throughout recent decades resulting in increased vehicle traffic along routes into and out of town – making it difficult for people who maintain close ties with their hometown to live there permanently anymore without moving away altogether or changing their nameakes entirely! However despite these challenges – both past and present – some may yet choose to cling onto memories or feelings associated with their childhood home during our rapidly gentrifying world where even small communities can experience dramatic changes overnight!
