The first European to visit Hawthorne was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he gave the name to the village because of its many hawthorn trees. The first coffee beans were grown here by Dutch settlers in 1675. In 1854, John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in Hawthorne and began exporting coffee from his plantation there. He is credited with introducing espresso to the world and helping spur America's economic growth during the 20th century. Hawthorne has been known for its coffee since before it became a town and its slogan is "the best cup of Joe you'll ever drink." Hawthorne is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton–Basking Ridge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Hawthorne were Swedish immigrants who arrived in 1814. They set up a small farm near what is now Hawthorne High School and built a log cabin on the edge of the woods. In 1825, they moved to what is now known as First Street and started to build their house from logs using horse power and an axe. They were successful enough that they decided to move again, this time to a more spacious location on Third Street between Orange and Livingston Streets. In 1830, John Denton bought land next door to where First and Third Streets meet for $1 per acre (which was then worth $ ). He named his new property Hawthorne after one of his ancestors who had settled there some years earlier. By 1840, other settlers had followed Denton's lead and established themselves in Hawthorne including Abram Cuthbert (1810-1874), Augustus Halsey (1816-1885), Isaac Webber (1800-1868) and James Fenton (1786-1847). With its own post office, storehouse and seed storage facility built by Abram Cuthbert in 1845 (), Hawthorne soon became well known throughout Sussex County for its quality produce such as apples, pears and grapes. By 1870, Hawthorne had two churches: the Methodist Episcopal Church which was built on South Union Avenue in 1871; and the Presbyterian Church which was built on East Main Street between Union Avenue and Second Street in 1872 (). A school was also constructed for students at this time: The Harrison School which served grade school through high school from 1870 until 1908 (). After being closed for many years due to financial difficulties (), it reopened as The Newhawke School District No. 1 Middle School which serves grades six through eight () in 1984 (). On July 11, 1920 aka " Haworth Day ", citizens of Sussex County took action against Prohibitionism with a large picnic ""organized by local leaders"" at Mount Hope Cemetery (). This event included speeches by Mayor Harry Beal (), Congressman David Nourse () & Borough President William Pogue () among others... As part of the festivitiesfestivitieswere held at various locations throughout Sussex County including Myerson Park (), Warwick Township Cemetery ()) & Lakewood Cemetery (); refreshments were provided by several local businessesincluding George’s Pub., Mrs Kapp’s Dairy Store(), Mr&Mrs Boyd’s Bakery(), etc... Many residents participatedin picking fruit from their trees duringthe picnicand enjoying several rounds of golf from Municipal Golf Course (). There were also contests such as beauty pageants () judged by membersofthe press or public beforebeing announcedto the assembled crowdvia speaker() or dance().
Hawthorne was founded by John Haworth in 1795. The town is named after the English author and politician, John Hawthorn.
