Hawthorne, New Jersey is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hoboken–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first European to encounter what is now Hawthorne was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 28, 1524 when he sailed upriver from Staten Island and sighted an opening in the Great Lakes that led to Hudson Bay. He named it "Verrazano's Bay" after himself and his ship. In 1714 John Hughes founded a tavern calledthe Howard House near present-day Hawthorne with the land he purchased from Nicholas de Montresor for $2 per acre (about $ today). In 1725 Jonas Noyes acquired right of way into Hicksville Township from Samuel Morin for £8 per acre (about $ ). When Morin died in 1729 his heirs sold their share back to Noyes for £10 per acre (about $ ). Noyes built a gristmill on Hackensack River where it still stands and operated it until 1837. In 1838 James Fenton bought the mill and made it into a flour mill which continued operation until 1917 when it burned down. The current mill building was built in 1912 by George Ewing but has been altered many times over its history including being used as a styrofoam factory during World War II. On July 4, 1777, General Benedict Arnold's army landed at Perth Amboy on Long Island Sound and marched northward towards Trenton; however they were met by Major-General Nathanael Greene's army early August 3 at Monmouth Junction close to present-day Elizabethtown Township. At this point Arnold resigned his commission as major general due to ill health and retreated northeast through Monmouth Junction towards Princeton; however Greene pursued him with artillery fire that compelled him finally to turn around about 100 miles north of Princeton near Bound Brook before withdrawing back southward under cover of darkness on August 5 nightfall under heavy British artillery fire while Arnold reached Princeton unharmed two days later on August 7. On September 5 General Howe arrived at Princeton with 1st Brigade under Colonel William Howe commanded by Brigadier Isaac Brockman arriving late evening having traveled all day long across open country only reaching Princeton just before nightfall because of bad news coming out of Manhattan about Sullivan’s Army advancing rapidly towards Trenton via Westchester County—a development which had already caused great alarm throughout New Jersey.—This battle resulted in much loss on both sides including 950 killed or wounded—an event later referred to as “The Road To Trenton”.—After this engagement General Howe ordered all forces withdrawn within twenty four hours so that he could take advantage of fresh troops brought over from Canada who were engaged against American forces at Saratoga Ridge.— ground which would eventually be renamed Arlington Cemetery.—Hawthorne became part of Newark Municipal Borough on February 14, 1947 effective date monies created pursuant thereto were paid into municipal funds rather than state coffers.— Today Hawthorne remains an agricultural community located outside the city limits

Hawthorne is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Middletown, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Hawthorne were Dutch families who arrived in 1664. In 1727, John Morris purchased land east of the Hudson River from the Lenape and built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. Morris named his settlement after Humphrey Haworth, an Englishman who had settled nearby in 1664. The first post office was established at Hawthorne in 1729 and was called "Newburgh". The name change to "Hawthorne" due to its location near then-newtown of Hackensack by then-owner Nicholas Putnam. In 1838, the township became organized as part of Hunterdon County when it was created from portions of Middlesex Township; however, it continued to be known as "Hawthorne" until 1889 when it became part of Camden Township. The community Hartwick (originally spelled Hartsfield) grew up around military encampments that were erected along both sides of the Delaware River during World War I to provide troops with food and water transportation during trench warfare on the Western Front. Hartwick's nickname came from nearby Hartsfield Field Airport which served as a staging area for American aircraft engaged in fighter combat over Europe during World War I. After hostilities ended and war veterans returned home, many hartwick businesses closed or changed hands because few people wanted to associate themselves with such an wartime memory. On July 1, 1925 – just four years after incorporation – Hawthorne merged into Camden Township through a referendum vote conducted by township officials following approval by the state government under then-Governor William Donald Schaefer III.. Hawthorne remained unincorporated until November 15, 1951 when it reincorporated within Camden Township through another referendum vote conducted by township officials following approval by the state government under then-Governor Raymond Nader II.. On October 9, 1957 Driscoll Avenue opened as one of two major arterial streets running north/south through Hawthorne between Atlantic and Camden Avenues; this street has since been renamed most recently "Fox Road." This event marked not only Hawthornes annexation into Camden but also its designation as an incorporated municipality making it subject to all borough ordinances and regulations including zoning requirements set forth in Borough Code section 3A3-.5(a). Prior to this date there were no laws governing municipalities other than those set forth in Borough Code section 3A3-.5(a). It should be noted that while Fox Road technically marks residential boundaries within Hawthorne municipality limits - including Driscolls Avenue - much social life takes place on both Atlantic Avenue & South Main Street where most businesses are located
