Hawthorne, New Jersey is home to one of the oldest coffeehouses in the United States. The first coffee shop was founded in 1812 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his family. It was located on the corner of Market and Washington Streets in Hawthorne. In 1827, John Jacob Astor started a business called The Nations Coffee House at 12 Broad Street in Hawthorne. This business served as the nucleus for what would become known as Starbucks. In 1865, Elijah Fenton opened The Anchor Coffee House at 7 Main Street in Hawthorne. This establishment became an important stop for travelers traveling between Philadelphia and Manhattan. In 1892, Josephine Baker opened her own coffee house named Joe's Place at 107 Main Street in Hawthorne. This establishment became an important hub for local baking operations and remained open until 1978 when it closed its doors due to financial troubles. Today, there are still remnants of these older establishments scattered throughout Hawthorne - most notably The Anchor Cafe at 9 Wethersfield Ave., which still serves delicious java every morning from start to finish!

Hawthorne, NJ is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 3,711 as of the 2000 Census. It is located on the western edge of the township and forms part of the Camden–North Bergen metropolitan area. The Township of Hawthorne was created on November 1, 1837 from portions of Middlesex and Sussex counties. It was named for Nathaniel Hawthorne, an American author and editor who wrote novels in the century before its creation. Hawthorne had no physical boundaries until 1921 when it received a sectional grant from then-Gov. Woodrow Wilson to increase its size by 10%, which also included West Deptford Township to the east and South Plainfield Township to the west. The first post office in Hawthorne opened in 1838 and served as both a stop on stagecoach routes between Newark Liberty/Elizabeth (now Elizabeth) and Trenton (now Morristown). In 1839, John Fenton built a gristmill at Milltown which became one of several importantstone mills in Hawthorne through its years as an agricultural community withself reliant upon flour exports from Long Branch,NJ that were transported by wagon or truck over horse or oxen teams across Mercer county's long Bridgeport-Waspson Valley highway system. In 1847-48 The Trustees of State College established their institution here with classes starting September 15th under auspices of Rutgers University president Bishop Talbot de Salinas; enrollment grew rapidly throughout unusual circumstances: Rutgers purchased land adjoining State College so that all male students could contiguous attend college while female students took courses offered by Morris & Essex Female Academy; state funding enabled colleges to offer programs leading to university degrees even though tuition rates remained high because colonial society did not support higher education for women beyond housewives; many local farmers turned out into successful college graduates such as engineers, physicians etc.; "The Record" printed articles by educators giving lectures atCollege about various subjects including history industries development etc." Hudson’s Bay Company started shipping goods there beginning in 1793 along what is now Route 9 south from Jiffy Lube
