The United States Air Force (USAF) was founded on August 29, 1947 by President Harry S. Truman with the goal of providing air support for American forces in World War II. The USAF has grown to become one of the world's most powerful militaries and its members include more than 330 countries. The USAF is responsible for conducting operations in every corner of the Earth and employs more than 380,000 people. Air Force Day is celebrated annually on November 11th in commemoration of America's military service to our nation and our allies during World War II. This holiday celebrates all aspects of airpower - from aerial refueling to international airspace maintenance. As part of this celebration, many USAF personnel participate in events around Hawthorne, New Jersey that focus on Squadron flying traditions and culture as well as honoring those who have served in the USAF since 1947. On October 20th, 1957, General Curtis LeMay presented a gift to Hawthorne residents - an F-86F Sabre fighter aircraft - which represented the first combat deployment of US Air Forces in Southeast Asia during Operation Market Garden. Since then, Special Forces units from both the USAAF and USAF have deployed numerous times throughout multiple wars including Desert Storm in 1991 and Afghanistan in 2001. In recent years, we've seen deployments to Joint Base Andrews near Washington D.C., Incirlik AFB just outside Istanbul/Turkey (leading up to our current mission – Operation Inherent Resolve) as well as various locations worldwide such as RAF Mildenhall near London England (leading up to next year's NATO summit).

The Hawthorne Air Force Base gift history began in the early 1940s when General James "Jimmy" Mattis joined the military. He was stationed at Hawthorne and quickly became friends with then-Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Jr. The two men decided to start a gift tradition at Hawthorne and give out gifts every month during their time together. This continued until Vandenberg's death in 1948. In 1951, General George Patton visited Hawthorne and started giving out gifts as well. After Patton's death, the gift tradition continued and eventually evolved into what it is today - an annual air force event where guests from all over come to celebrate Major General Vandenberg's memory and legacy.
Hawthorne is a borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Hawthorne was founded in 1824 by Increase Mifflin and John Haworth as an agricultural township. It became a borough on May 25, 1907, from portions of Gloucester Township. The name comes from the old English word "hauter" meaning "upper" or "chief". The first settler in Hawthorne was John Haworth who arrived in 1824. In 1826 he married Susannah White; they had five children. In 1829 they bought 1/2 acre (0.20 km²) of land on which they built their house now known as Old Main House. From this farm John raised his family for many years until 1850 when he sold it to Isaac Pappoe for $700 sterling (about $10,000 today). In 1828-9 Nathaniel Hawthorne lived with his cousins Samuel Morse and Timothy Pickering in Hackensack while attending Rutgers University where he earned a degree in mathematics and natural philosophy under James Clerk Maxwell’s guidance (1831). He then returned home to Hawthorne where he began work on his first important scientific publication “On the Centrifugal Force” which appeared in quarto magazine volume 7 No 5 (May 1830). This article represents one of the earliest social studies ever written about science and technology under the heading “the effects of modern improvements upon morals” This paper has been reprinted multiple times throughout history including being appended to Darwin's book On human nature . When it was published what are considered to be its landmark papers were not only affecting physics but also sociology which would eventually lead to Marx's analysis of society

Hawthorne is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the East Rutherford–Jersey City, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that nowincludes Hawthorne was first settled by English colonists in 1664 as Head Quarters of Middlesex Township. By 1795 it had become part of Hunterdon County and by 1814 it had become part of Morris County. In 1825 Hawthorne became a part of Union County and in 1828 it became a part of the newly created township of Perth Amboy. The first post office was established in 1827 and served until 1870. Hawthorne has been under both Republican and Democratic control since its incorporation as a township. In 1984, Hawthorne's Republican mayor, Dick Raymonde, resigned after being caught with cocaine; he was then impeached but pardoned by then-Governor Tom Kean before his impeachment could take place. In 2009, village president Joseph Furlong pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery and perjury for falsely claiming political contributions from developers in order to win government contracts; he received a three-year prison sentence followed by five years' probation and $250,000 fine
Hawthorne was originally founded in 1795 by Revolutionary War General James Comey. It became a borough in 1881 and then a city in 1912.
