Hawthorne is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,956 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Union Township, NJ metropolitan area and is home to the Delran Mall. Hawthorne was founded by Captain John Hawkins on November 1, 1795 as Westfield Township and incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1834. The name of the borough was changed to Hawthorne on May 2nd of that year in honor of General Nathaniel Hawthorne who had fought in the American Revolution and died in 1802 at age 31 years old. The first post office opened in 1834 and continued operating until it closed on October 24th of that same year due to lack of customers. The current post office building was built in 1961 and has been continuously open since then. Hawthorne originally consisted primarily of farmland with a few small businesses scattered around it until residential development became more prevalent after World War II. After reaching its peak population during the early 1960s with over 12,000 people living there, tha town experienced rapid declines during the 1970s and 1980s due to a variety of reasons including demographic changes (the advent of commuting options such as cars), economic hardship caused by low real estate values, and increasing competition from other municipalities within Middlesex County. However, recent growth has seen renewed interest in Hawthorne among residents as well as entrepreneurs looking for an opportunity to start their own business or expand an existing one. Hawthorne, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,849 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated on March 11, 1834. The name "Hawthorne" is derived from the Italian word "hauteronne" meaning "highland". Hawthorne is located on the border of Middlesex and Essex Counties and occupies a high plateau overlooking South Central NJ. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. The first people to live in what is now Hawthorne were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game nearpresent-day Seekonk Township and Haworth Village on Mayflower Creek in 1683. The first European settler in what is now Hawthorne was Nicholas Southwick who arrived there in 1714 with his family after sailing from England under Captains John Smith and Benedict Arnold. Southwick built himself a cabin on an olden farmstead which he named 'Thornbury'. He also developed some farming operations hereabouts before moving to Amboy (now part of Edison) where he became one of the earliest developers in that township. In 1806-7 Abraham Lincoln Roads were built through this area by Major General Andrew Jackson's army as part of his wider Invasion of Upper New York campaign; their purpose being to open up new lands for colonization by white men as well as deprive Native Americans of their traditional hunting grounds. In 1865 Union troops burned down homes along nearby White Marsh Road during their raid into Middlesex County which led to increased tension between soldiers and local civilians over access to propertyrights and other important issues including land ownership throughout eastern NJ during these days Of particular note are reports that several field hospitals set up shop within walking distance or less than two miles (3 km) radius around Ludlowtown Center while military personnel conducted surgery here - including major surgeries such as those for brain tumors - without informing or consulting local physicians or residents! On July 4th 1865 about 150 black men armed with spears brigaded themselves together against Confederate troopers throughout northeastern NJ when they attacked a Union military encampment located just outside Sparta Plainsboro; ensuing violence resulted in more than 20 dead & 300 injured! In 1847 Colonel George Wright purchased land eastward from present day Hawthorne along Seekonk Creek/White Marsh Road; upon its acquisition he renamed it Talbot Mountain after himself! From this point forward Hawthorne essentially consisted only of Wright's holdings until 1961 when much adjacent acreage was annexed by neighboring Edison Township during an effort by then Mayor Joseph corbett to increase its population! Today many residents refer back nostalgically to those early days...of farms tobacco fields sportsmans paradise!!
