The borough is named for Hasbrouck Mountain, which rises to an altitude of 653 feet (200 m). The first settlement in what is now Hasbrouck Heights was made on July 1, 1795 by Alexander Macomb and his family from Kingston Township, Ontario. On January 1, 1837, part of Hasbrouck Heights became part of Hackensack Township. On October 10, 1875, all of Hasbrouck Heights became a part of Bergen County. The Borough has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as a township. Back when it was only a small town with just over 100 residents and less than one square mile (2 km²), the community had several businesses that still operate today: Alder Street Furniture Store; Bamberger's restaurant; Citizens Bank and Trust Company; Dickenson Telephone Company; Elsie's grocery store; First National Bank of America In 1917-1920 two-thirds of the workforce at various businesses were women who did not have any male counterparts at the time due to prohibition laws passed during World War I) . There also existed an ice cream parlor called " cones" which operated for many years until it closed down because there wasn't enough business to support it without customers coming from outside Borough limits

The town was named after Hasbrouck, a village in the Netherlands. The first inhabitants of Hasbrouck Heights were farmers and their families. When America became a country, these immigrants decided to move to what is now New Jersey because it was less expensive than Pennsylvania and New York. They started farming land that they had bought from the Indians. Over time, the town grew and changed hands several times. In 1881, it was given to John A. Maclay as part of his donation for Stroudsburg University (now Monmouth University). The Maclay family then lived in Hasbrouck Heights until their death in 1956. In 1951, hasbrouck Heights became an incorporated city with its own government and police department. It has been a borough since 1969 when it merged with neighboring Ridgewood Township . In 2013, Hasbrouck Heights annexed Rahway Township which made it one municipality once again!
