Harrison, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Newark Liberty International Airport metropolitan area. Harrison was formed on March 14, 1814 from parts of Elizabeth and Paterson townships. The name comes from English explorer George Washington's visit to Harrison Township in 1786. The first settler in Harrison Township was David Caldwell who arrived there in 1788. In 1814, the township was named for General George Washington when he visited it during his tour of New Jersey. On July 1, 1824, Harrison became a borough under the new Municipal Code of NJ due to its Size and Population Limit set by the state legislature as part of efforts to create more municipalities statewide. Under Borough President John Fenton's leadership in the early 1960s, many improvements were made to Harrison's infrastructure including: an improve-the-street program which replaced old streetlights with new LED lights; installation of storm drains on all streets; and construction of sidewalks and bike lanes around town centers as well as extending vehicular access along 4th Street into town limits (now known as Cedar Lane). These projects helped make Harrison one of the most walkable communities in New Jersey while also improving public safety by reducing traffic congestion on major streets
