This base was used for storage and storage areas for aircraft during World War II. The first military deployment of the United States Navy took place on December 8th 1941 when USS Hornet (CV-2) sailed from Quonset Point to participate in Operation Neptune's Spear, an attack against Japan. The ship arrived at Hampton Roads early on December 9th and began loading supplies. On December 10th, USS Hornet left Hampton Roads for its deployment to the waters off of Okinawa. It was then that America's First Fleet would take part in battle against Imperial Japanese forces. Shipments from Quonset Point continued throughout the war and by 1945, the Naval Air Station had been converted into an airport capable of handling naval aircraft. In 1957, NAS Quonset Point became home to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar which became operational as America's first Marine Corps airfield outside of California. NAS Miramar would continue serving as an airfield until it closed in 1992 after being badly damaged by Hurricane Andrew. In 1951, NAS North Island opened as a new station adjacent to NAS Miramar and it would serve as America's Naval Sea Terminal afloat until it closed in 1978 due to budget cuts within the Reagan Administration. At North Island we found our largest collection of surplus weapons ever assembled including over 50 cannonball launchers and 2 million rounds of ammunition! Harrison, New Jersey is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. The name of Harrison is derived from the Delaware River and its surrounding territory. The town was formed on October 11, 1847 from part of Newark Township. It was named for General Henry Knox (1786-1865), an officer in the Continental Army and a member of the United States Senate who served as Foreign Minister under Ulysses S. Grant (1857-1924). Harrison has a rich history dating back to its founding by colonists from what is now Delaware County. In 1795, when George Washington visited Trenton andpresided over his inauguration as president of the United States, he journeyed through Harrison Township on horseback to view the new capital city which had been founded just across the river by Major General John Hackett. In 1814, when Morrisania were established as two towns within Newark Township – one near West Side Road and one on Brick Lane – Harrison became known as Morrisania’s “Second Town” because it functioned more like a rural village than did Newark proper. This appellation continued until 1830 when Morristown became an incorporated municipality with greater powers than either Newark or Harrison Township. In 1835–36, during Andrew Jackson’sadministration as president of the United States, Harrison experienced significant growth due to professional immigration: More Germans arrived here than anywhere else in America at that time and many chose to settle in what would become known as “the German Village” along Main Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets west of Broad Street. By 1840 there were several churches and ten families living in Harrison; seven years later it had tripled in size to twenty-four families! 1) There are multiple explanations for why Harrison declined rapidly following incorporation into Morristown borough; however one potential reason may be attributable to land shortages caused by increased settlement brought about by Professional Immigration during Andrew Jackson's presidency which led to population growth but also numerous technological advances (electricity being among them) making life easier for those immigrants while reducing competition for available land within municipalities/boroughs

Harrison, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Hunterdon County after Plainsboro. Harrison is also home to the Monmouth County jail and the only high school in Hunterdon County. Harrison was settled by English colonists in 1681. The first white settler was John Harrison who built a mill on what is now Route 9 near modern day Harrisonville. By 1824, there were seven families living in Harrison Township and two families living in Hamilton Township (now part of Plainfield). In 1829, all of Sussex and parts of Hunterdon counties were organized as Middlesex County under authority of the New Jersey Legislature. On January 1, 1830, Harrison township became part of Monmouth County; however, it remained part of Hunterdon County until March 3, 1874 when it became part of Morristown Borough Council which was then absorbed into Plainfield borough council. In 1834–35 William Cohan set up an insurance business with his brother-in-law Isaac Maher thatbecame one of Hudson Valley's largest insurers and expanded rapidly throughout central and northeastern New Jersey during the late 19th century into Illinois,. He died suddenly on February 2nd 1865 at his farmhouse just outside Hudson Falls with no will or children to take over his estate which left $5 million to be divided among numerous heirs including locomotive builder George Stephenson (the father-in-law), bankers James Fenton (the uncle) and J P Morgan (the cousin). This large fortune provided much needed financial assistance for various schools and other local charities during their early years but gradually dwindled over time leading to Maher becoming one of history's most prominent landowners in Morris Township while still living on his farmstead until his death in 1922 at age 96 years old having outlasted three presidents - Woodrow Wilson among others - as well as every governor since! An interesting footnote about this grant came about when Haverford College changed its name from Dickinson College after coming under fire from Princeton students who felt that Dickinson had been too close to Princeton University; Haverford renamed itself "George Washington University" following protests by Princeton students! A special study committee chaired by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes found that "George Washington University" would do better than Dickinson College whereupon DickinsonCollege agreed to change its name back to Dickinson after some public outcry!
