Harrison is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,002 at the 2000 census. The name comes from Harrison's Ferry on the Delaware River. The first settlers in Harrison were farmers who arrived in 1795. They named their community after George Washington, who had been president of the United States at the time. In 1814, they built a gristmill and store near what is now known as Union Station to serve the town of Harrisonburg and its surrounding agricultural villages. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1824 but was rebuilt and continued to produce flour until it closed in 1954. In 1835, John Smith, an early settler and captain of a merchant ship that transported goods between Philadelphia and New York City founded a post office at what is now called Main Street in Harrisonburg. It served as the primary route for mail delivery until postal service was discontinued in 1926. On October 9, 1798, during America's War for Independence (1809–1812), Benjamin Harrison - then an officer with British forces - participated in skirmishes at Monmouth Court House before being captured by American forces later that year while serving aboard HMS "Albemarle". He was paroled after three years imprisonment and returned to America where he resumed his career as a lawyer and political figure before retiring from public life in 1830. A large brick factory began operations on Southwestern Boulevard near intersection of Route 309/310 shortly after World War II ended; it closed down around 1970s due to lack of demand for bricks following advances made within building materials technology at that time. According to the United States Census Bureau,[2] there are 10,002 people living in Harrison Township statewide; however, according to 2016 estimates from Edward Jones Inc., only 6 percent (3,811 people) reside within Harrison township itself; 95 percent (9 total) live elsewhere within Mercer County which includes Hudson Valley proper including Paterson NJ shoreline north of Elizabethtown NY border: 5% (291 residents) are located inside New Brunswick municipal limits; 3% (136 residents) reside just outside Trenton NJ city limits: all other settlements therein have no resident population information available
