Harrison is included in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Harrison" was given to the town by General George Washington and his Brigade of Mounted Infantry on their march from Trenton through the area in 1778 during his military campaign against the British Crown Prince Edward Cornwallis. In 1806, Jno. Biddle built a sawmill and grist mill on Upper Black Horse Run Creek in what is now Harrison Township. The first store opened in 1810 and soon there were several other stores along Upper Blackhorse Run. In 1825, Judge John Purdy organized a township comprising parts of Harrison Township with 3 miles (5 km) of side roads for its residents to carry on their agricultural pursuits alone or with others within 10 miles (16 km). This ordinance served as the basis for later township organization throughout Mercer County until it became an incorporated municipality in 1896 under State law when township boundaries were redefined following a referendum vote by residents of all municipalities within Mercer County except Harrison Township itself which voted not to incorporation because it did not want any restrictions on its development that would apply to its own municipal growth).
