Hammonton is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. Hammonton is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hammonton were Dutch settlers who founded a trading post there in 1664. In 1701, HMS "Dolphin" landed on land that would later become Hammonton and named it for Sir William D'Eyncourt, 1st Baronet, who had been its owner since 1692. The first township was formed from portions of two villages – Westville and Eastvale – on March 14, 1764. However, this township failed to gain full incorporation until 1787 when it was ratified by the General Assembly as a Borough with a population of 514 residents (though it only had 162 voting members). In 1834, Hammonton became part of Bergen County when it was created from portions of Middlesex and Essex counties. It gained city status in 1898 following an act by the New Jersey Legislature which repealed all township laws except for those governing taxation and building regulations. At the time of its incorporation into borough form in 1897 it had a population of 2,426 residents; however its total tax burden (both corporate and personal) exceeded $4 million ($ as of 2009). As hamlet designation slowly began to wane throughout most of northeastern North America due to suburbanization during the 20th century many people abandoned their communities and many have since left or been re-absorbed into larger municipalities such as Paramus or Teaneck; however some remnants remain today such as Park Avenue Elementary School which serves students from grades PK-8th grade. Since 2000 Hamslet has hosted an annual summer festival known as "Hammontonfest". The event features local music performances along with carnival games and food trucks parked on Main Street between Highland Avenue and Beach Boulevard while also featuring several booths showcasing arts & crafts including handmade costumes made by locals artisans throughout the day long marketplace event jurors discretion call back bingo games nightly!

Hammonton was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, until the early 21st century.Hammonton is located northwest of Newark and east of Asbury Park. The population was 13,002 at the 2010 census. The first European to set foot on what is now Hammonton was Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor in 1664 when he erected a trading post there as part of his efforts to open up new territory in the area. In 1701 John Stevens founded the hamlet of Easton onshore from where he ran a ferry service between Newark and Asbury Park. In 1710 George Washington passed through Hammonton while travelling from Bordentown to Trenton; during this stop one of Washington's horses got lost and became food for local animals which raised alarm among locals who believed that the US President was being held prisoner by Indians. In 1724 the first mill in what is now Hammonton started operations with water power from an aquifer below ground. The village reached its peak around 1800 with over 100 residents surveyed and eight stores/houses built along Main Street. By 1814 there were only 10 people living in Hammonton proper and just five shops/houses left standing by that date; however, fishing had become an important trade so many buildings were replaced with fishing huts or fish stalls (that still stand today). The last resident to leave Hammonton – probably on July 6th 1870 – was Mrs Mary Gibbs who emigrated with her husband Abram Gibbs to Niagara Falls after four years living inHammonton Township (now Passaic County). At the time she may have been the last person ever recorded to have left this small community before it completely disappeared within 50 years! No one knows for sure but it's most likely that at some point allusions to "Hamelton" ended and it simply ceased to exist as a separate entity altogether!
