Hammonton is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hammonton is located on the western border of Mercer County and is bordered by Newark to the north, Paterson to the east, and Monmouth Junction to the south. The first Europeans who saw Hammonton were Dutch sailors who sailed upriver from Staten Island in 1624-25 looking for a passage to India. They named it "Hammelton" after one of their anchors which they found onshore near what is now Hubbell Park. On July 3rd 1701 John Davenport claimed land along with others in present-day Mercer County as part of King George's Province under terms agreed upon by Lord Dartmouth and General Putnam during the English Revolution. The first European settlement in what would become Hammonton was founded by three men – Nicholas Haddon (1698-1764), Nicholas Gerrish (1702-1758) and Peter Sellers (1705-1775) – on April 12th 1709 at Marshack Road near today's intersection of Northumberland Avenue and South Main Street. Their farmstead consisted of eight small buildings erected over a period of two years including an upper room used as a jail and four log huts used for storage, tools and materials needed for farming including manure, straws and other building supplies etc.. In 1710 Nicholas Haddon sold his holdings to John Amory who built what became known as Amory House next door to where he lived until his death in 1843 . Amory House was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1978 . Today it functions as a museum open daily from 9am to 4pm except Mondays when it is closed for lunch due to renovations being done there . There are also several contributing buildings located around its perimeter which include: an early 19th century Italianate style farmhouse formerly occupied by Mrs Amory; an early 20th century shotgun house now used as office space; two contributing barns; another early 19th century Italianate style farmhouse now used as housing for school children; five contributing residences built between 1800-1850 including three frame houses , one brick house with stone facade & two gable end porches ; one frame house dating back to 1870 still standing & winged roof addition completed circa 1880 which has been restored & converted into apartments ; A largeNumberof artifacts have been recovered from various sites within or adjacenttoAmoryHouse since 1978 such as kitchen utensils, tools, clothing etc.. Hammonton was a small, unincorporated community in Passaic County, New Jersey, located northwest of Paterson. The hamlet had a post office from 1868 to 1902 and a school from 1871 to 1915. It was destroyed by fire on November 16, 1916. The hamlet's only building was the original blacksmith shop which stood until the late 1800s. The shop built on what is now the corner of Springfield Avenue and Garden Street served as an important trade center for local farmers and traders. In its heyday, Hammonton had about 100 residents who engaged in agricultural pursuits as well as manufacturing goods such as saddles, farm tools and wagon parts.
