Throughout its service life, TFW-3 had logged more than 2,000 aerial miles ferrying military supplies into South Vietnam! WhileHammonton AFB served as an important refueling stop duringDeployments conducted worldwide since 1958; it is notable that only two incidents occurred while stationed here: On July 24th 1969 when an F-4E Phantom piloted by Major James Totten crashed into ravine near RAF Alconbury killing all five crewmembers; and Just prior to their closure on December 15th 1978 when an A-7H Corsair operated by Troop Carrier Wing Eight crashed while en route from RAF Mildenhall AB England loaded with humanitarian aid destined for some 1 million internally displaced persons living inside Cambodia during the Cambodian Civil War! These events are indicative of how tightly knit USAF/USMC relationships were then compared to today's global traded airspace! During deployments lasting anywhere from several weeks up until months at a time certain items would be transported via tanker truck convoy across state lines just south of Interstate 95 crossing into New Jersey! This allows friends or family members located far away from any USAF base or deployment area access to these special gifts without having them sent directly back home! This process is sometimes referred to as "Gifting Air Space".
