On July 4, 1855, Haddonfield was founded by Nathaniel Hawthorne in what is now Middlesex County. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 675. By 1870 the population had grown to 1,500 and in 1875 it reached 2,000. In 1895 the town was renamed Haddonfield after Dr. George Washington Haddon who served as President of Rutgers University at Newark from 1892-1895. In 1916, the first commercial coffee beans were roasted in Haddonfield. At that time, coffee beans were roasted on small batches for individual customers or family farmers who sold their coffee direct to consumers. The name "Haddonfield" comes from the Old English hamadon, meaning "a place where hams are cooked." The first settlement in the area was at West Egg on the east bank of the Hackensack River. By 1800, there were 907 people living in Haddonfield Township. In 1814, a post office called Haddonfield was established at what is now Hardingstown with 5 inhabitants. In 1847, when Morris County was created, Haddonfield became part of it and remained an independent township until 1955. The township's economy has been based largely on agriculture for most of its history. Today, however, many businesses have moved to suburban areas due to growing cost of living or other reasons. There are several high-tech firms located within commuting distance of the town center as well as major medical centers and other important hospitals within easy reach. Although some residents commute out to larger cities for work or pleasure purposes (such as Paterson or Newark), most residents live close to their homes and enjoy access to cultural attractions such as shopping malls and parks that are only a short drive away.

Haddonfield, New Jersey is a town in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Haddonfield was founded in 1732 by Ephraim Haddon and his family from Bucks County. The first post office in Haddonfield was established in 1733. In 1814, the name of the town changed to honor General George Washington during his visit to America. The present-day town of Haddonfield was named for Ephraim Mennonite theologian Dr. Samuel Payson Haddon (1786-1857). The community of West Amboy developed within immediate sight of Haddonfield between 1810 and 1830; prior to this time it was located in Burlington Township, on what is now South Street east of Route 22 north of Route 1A (now Broad Street). After West Amboy became an incorporated village in 1831, its leaders petitioned for and received township status with a vote by residents on February 6, 1835. In 1870, when Section 8 of Rutgers University's land grant program went into effect, six families - three men and three women - bought 3 acres (1 km²) near what is now Old Bridge Road/Route 22 for $5 per acre ($27 per hectare) because they could not find enough buyers interested in purchase without deeds being given away or lottery tickets being sold. The settlement grew rapidly due to their workforce consisting largely of Irish Catholics who had fled potato famine Ireland en masse during the 1840s aboard ships headed for North America.. On November 16th 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant arrived at West Amboy Station disembarking from USS "Sonship" after raiding Norfolk Naval Shipyard there four days earlier as part of Operation Crossroads; heading northeast along Headlands Road towards Camden and then across county lines into Pennsylvania before finally reaching Princeton Junction late that night.[2] As news spread throughout New Jersey about Grant's arrival local farmers began receiving panicked letters from their neighbors informing them that military supplies being stored at naval yards were likely seized & burned should no one be found outside with carts laden with goods![3][4][5] Many people within South Amboy immediately started moving their belongings out onto Meetinghouse Hill where they built hastily erected fences around what would become their new home ever since![6][7][8] Although many people may have been surprised by Grant's entry into Northeast Pennsylvania they soon realized that American flags flying everywherePosted on every tree & pole spoke volumes about our fallen country...nations are falling apart!Grant wasn't just another US general going through Eastern PA; he'd been leading armies all over Europe...and here we were living proof!!!!!!

The township was formed on October 15, 1814 from portions of Cumberland Township. On February 14, 1876, it merged with the nearby borough of Union to form the new borough of Haddonfield.
