Haddonfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. Haddonfield is one of five towns in Hunterdon County and its borough. The other four are Easton, Flemington, Westwood and Northvale. The first recorded settlement in what is now Haddonfield was made on March 18th 1701 by Captain John Smith as part of the attempt to found a post west of the Susquehanna River. The town's name may derive from the old Dutch word "hoedenwijk" meaning hamlet or farmstead - this could be because early settlers were mostly farmers who grew corn and wheat crops. It wasn't until 1730 that a successful effort was made to build a bridge over the Hackensack River which would connect Haddonfield with Ridgefield Township to the east. This effort failed due to opposition from landowners upstream who saw the proposed crossing as an infringement on their property rights. In 1814, while still living in England, General George Washington visited Haddonfield during his tour of northern New Jersey and attended a dinner at White Sands Inn where he met local militia captain Nathaniel Myrick and some flatlanders who had emigrated there in search of land grants better suited their needs than those available through Pennsylvania's western frontier. After dinner Washington met Myrick outside where they discussed possibilities for joining forces against British forces advancing towards Philadelphia via Trenton route (now Interstate 95). In 1815 General James Kents Brigade under Major General David Twiggs attacked British troops near Princeton on December 15th but were routing before reaching Haddonfield; when news reached home about this engagement Kents ordered his brigade withdrawn without losing any men except for two officers killed later that day by friendly fire from British skirmishers stationed at Princeton . Because no bodies were ever recovered from that battle it has been suggested that Kents' unit withdrew empty-handed rather than being destroyed – although no documentary evidence supports this claim In 1835 both Hudson Valley Railroad Company (later known as IRT) tracks crossed Route 22 just north of present-day Monmouth Junction; as part of timetabling changes mandated by American Great Northern Railway (A&R) ownership of much northeastern trackage within America after its acquisition of IRR stock earlier that year, these tracks became part of A&R's newly founded Newark–Emmons Division which also included parts of Brick Township including what is now downtown Haddonfield On July 9th 1838 David Ziegler bought 640 acres (256 hectares) along Monmouth Junction Road from Nicholas Pemberton for $5 per acre ($40 per hectare). This purchase marked Ziegler's arrival into agriculture after years spent owning urban real estate interests primarily throughout Passaic County and also extending into Middlesex County across the river there . On November 3rd 1840 he sold 640 acres (256 hectares), including what is today downtown Haddonville for $10 per acre ($60 per hectare). As with most agricultural purchases during this time period prices tended to reflect actual production value rather than market value so it isn't clear how much money Ziegler actually paid for his land – though given he held title to it until 1916 it seems likely he did quite well based on current valuation alone On October 12nd 1851 businessman Augustus Saint John organized a meeting at Newton Charter Schoolhouse located off Main Street in Newton parish to discuss forming a new township formed outof portions of Readington Township including Newton village situated eastward thereof bounded northerly by said readington village line thence easterly by said readington village line unto Hackensack Creek aforesaid thence westerly by said hackensack creek line unto Morris Plains aforesaid thence southerly by said Morris Plains line unto Bound Brook station therein considered constitute one body politic called "Newtown Township", etc., etc., etc., resulting in incorporation on November 3rd1850 ). At this meeting SaintJohn appointed William Singleton Acting Chairman with authority to issue deeds . On December 12th 1850 Augustus Saint John erected stone buildings within Newtown township hall – becoming only THE PERSON TO DO SO IN NEWTON TOWNSHIP DISTANCE RECORDED FROM AN EVENT THAT OCCURRED ABOUT 20 YEARS EARLIER During World War II much important manufacturing took place within Driscoll Park Steel Plant located just south/west Of Newtown center between Easton Rd./Route 9 & Cedar Avenue/Parkway
