Hackensack is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,912 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from Hackenacked, a place in Germany where Jakob Hess had his farmstead during the 18th century. The first European settlers in what is now Hackensack were Dutchmen who arrived as part of an effort to settle land grants made to them by King George II of Great Britain. On November 13, 1676, the Dutch founded Bergen Academy on the corner of College and Washington Avenues. This was followed by Hackensack Academy (now Hackensack University) on Jameson Avenue in 1706. In 1714, Samuel de Saulles purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) around what is nowHackensack and built his mansion there which became known as Saulles Castle after him. The area that includes present-day Hackensacks Township was part of Middlesex County until it was annexed by Bergen County on February 3, 1847. In 1847, Carbondale & Company began developing lands east of Newark including what is now Hackensack and other townships withinBergen County including North Caldwell and South Caldwell adjacent to Newark Airport/ Liberty International Airport with plans for large industrial development called Gateway Park which never came to fruition due to lack of funding and competition from other developers.
