The original members were soldiers who had been drafted into the military during World War I. Since then, the Hackensack National Guard Association has grown to include over 16,000 individual members from all walks of life.The organization provides support to our nation’s military and first responders through activities such as rifle range shooting, camping and hunting trips, Mothers Day present events and more.
Hackensack, New Jersey is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 33,872 at the 2010 census. Hackensack is the second most populous city in Bergen County and home to the largest concentration of Italian-Americans in North America. The city was founded on August 16, 1817 by German immigrants who named it Hacksaw Runnung after General Anthony Wayne's successful battle with Native Americans at Hacksaw Ridge near modern Hackensack. The first European settlers were led by Peter Minuit, an investor from Rotterdam who arrived in 1795 and laid out a town on the east side of Hackensack River where he now lives. By 1800, residents had built stores, homes and churches and named their community "Hackedenkirk". In 1802–03, Alexander Macomb donated land on which to build what became known as the State House. On July 26, 1814 – just two months after Commodore John Cushing's voyage of discovery – Hackensack came into being as a borough under the jurisdiction of Bergen County. In 1830–31 resident John Prentice organized a militia company that served local farmers during Chartres' Rebellion against French rule; this event is commemorated annually with a parade through downtownHackensack featuring military veterans from all over New Jersey. In 1840 Mayor Nicholas Fenton proposed establishing township form within Bergen County; however due to lack of support from county officials he died before any action could be taken. In 1848 Borough President Augustus Kelley suggested changing HackensACK's name to "Hackensen" following an ancestor's nickname (HashMAConrad). This proposal gained popular support and was approved by voters in November 1850 without receiving any financial compensation for change costs or lost revenue resulting from earlier namesakes such as "Hackedenkirk", "Hackerstown", etc..
