Hackensack is a borough in the New Jersey town of Union City. It was formed on July 1, 1874, from the merger of two other towns, Hackensack and Ridgefield. The population was 27,567 at the 2010 census. The name "Hackensack" originated as a nickname for "Hacker's Point", an area near what is now Hackensack Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue in Perth Amboy. The point was first called Haffner's Bay after Captain Johann Heinrich Haffner who explored the bay in 1714. Hackensack has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years; their remains are still found at several locations around town. In 1695, Dutchman Hendrick de Vries discovered saltpeter mines in what is now Hackensack Township and named it De Vries Landt (the land of de Vries). On April 25, 1713, French soldier La Salle landed at Hackensacks Cove on Long Island and named it Rivière du Diable (River of Evil), after his 16-year-old assistant Pierre Duguay de la Tour. The first European to live permanently in what is now Hackensack Township was Englishman John Smith who built a house there in 1727-28. He named it Mount Pleasant after himself and his family members living nearby on Morrisania plantation which he inherited from his father: Robert Morris (1685–1746). In 1793, Jabez Morse settled down at Mashpee Gardens on Long Island where he built a 700-acre estate that included what is now known as Jabez Morse Park across from the present day Weehawken train station.
