Hackensack, New Jersey is a town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,865 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Mercer County and one of its two towns without a city charter. Hackensack began as an agricultural community on the east bank of the Hudson River between what are now Hackensack and Passaic Counties. In 1814, it became part of Bergen Township; in 1838 it became part of Mercer Township; and in 1871 it became part of Teaneck Township. From 1898 to 1951, Hackensack served as the Headquarters for United States Army European Command (USAREUR). The first military installation in Hackensack was Fort Monmouth which was built on land purchased from Dutch settlers near what is now Maplewood Avenue and Harrison Street in 1803. The fort was abandoned after only six months due to French attacks on New Netherland during the War for Independence. In 1804, American General George Washington arrived at Fort Monmouth and ordered Major John Stevens to build a new fortification on the east side ofriver opposite what is now Interstate 95. Stevens built Fort Washington which served as headquarters for USAREUR until 1951 when it was transferred to West Point, New York City. In 1862, following the Civil War, Union General Ambrose Burnside constructed batteries along both banks ofthe river opposite present-day Hackensack It should be noted that both sides used artillery during this conflict - Confederate forces fired upon our positions while Union troops conducted bombardments from above - these batteries remain standing today as tourist attractions adjacent to I-95 inHackensacksentimental area known locally as Battery Park North/south side

The Philadelphia-based steel manufacturer Donley & Sons built its steel mill on the east side of Hackensack Creek in 1915 and named it after William Donley, its president and chairman from 1916 to 1948. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1978 but has been rebuilt several times since then and now produces high-quality steel products for businesses all over the world including Home Depot and Ford Motor Company among others

Hackensack is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on May 14, 1905 from portions of Caldwell and Teaneck. The population was 23,023 at the 2010 census. Hackensack is located along the Hackensack River between Paramus and Parsippany Township. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hackensack were Dutch settlers who established a small trading post in 1624. By 1714, there were about 25 families living in what is now Hackensacks Borough. In 1814, the Treaty of Paris resulted in the end of the American Revolutionary War and brought an end to much fighting within New Jersey. The land that became Hackensack was divided among the victorious nations as part of peace settlement efforts. The town of Caldwell was founded by George Washington during his stay at Trenton Manor near present-day Woodbridge Township on April 12, 1817. George Washington had been planning to move his forces eastward after completing his campaign against British General Cornwallis during the Battle of Princeton and wanted to establish a new capital for America south of Newark (the current day Newark). When he learned that Trenton would not be accepted as America's new capital due to its location on the Delaware River opposite Philadelphia (then under British control), he decided to move closer to New York City instead. On October 15, 1800 – just two weeks after Fort Mercer had been built – Caldwell became an official township with 10 residents; it remained so until 1903 when it changed back into a borough with 23 residents when Paramus Township absorbed it into its borders that year. When Caldwell joinedhackensack borough on May 14th 1905 it consisted of: parts ofParamus Township including Brush Street north thereof; Teaneck; Caldwell Avenue east thereof from Route 9 northward past Cedar Avenue which forms border between Parsippany Township and Paramus Township thence northeastwardly along said border thence northeasterly along said route 9 towards Morristown thereto eastwardly along said route 9 towards Parsippany Heights thence northwestly along said route 9 towardsHackensack
On December 6, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring independence from Great Britain. On January 3, 1777, the first Continental Congress convened. The delegates were led by George Washington and John Adams. They decided to form a new government with a unicameral legislature and create an army. The Second Continental Congress met on July 4, 1777 and did not declare independence until September 26 of that year. In October of that year, the British forces invaded New Jersey and captured Trenton after a three-day siege. The town was burned to the ground and its inhabitants were deported to Canada or other colonies in what is known as the "Trenton Incident."
