Hackensack is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in New Jersey by land area and the second-smallest by population size. Hackensack is located on the border of Bergen County and Passaic County. The first settler in what would become Hackensack was Nicholas Fenton in 1785. By 1800, there were 10 households and 25 families living in what would becomeHackensack Township. In 1814, a post office was established at Hackensack with John Tilton as the first postmaster. A furnace built by Elijah Parish was used to blast rock for road construction in 1828 and it became known as "the Festival Furnace". In 1843, when Robert Moses took office as governor of New Jersey he created four new counties including Bergen County; Hackensack Township formed part of that county. AlthoughHackensack had been part of Bergen County for centuries before this change, it still needed to get its own sheriff and clerk-of-record which it did on February 9th, 1845 when Josephus Papp opened his office at 30 Main Street (now Park Avenue). Moses also increased taxes upon importation of goods from Europe so that more money could be raised for state infrastructure projects such as Turnpike expansion or building the Erie Canal .hackenacks growth continued during this time with many shops opening up along Main Street such as J C Penney's store which opened in 1902 adjacent to Saint Patrick's Cathedral . Over time other businesses followed suit such as Wernher Hogg's grocery store which closed down in 1964 but reopened under new ownership a few years later and then went out of business again just three years later.. On July 1st 1904 , Factoryville (later renamed Edison) came into being when two small towns merged: Edison & Hackensack combined to form what would become one village with a total population ofabout 100 people although some residents still lived near their old homes until after World War II due to shortages of housing elsewhere throughout the city ..By 1920 Factoryville had grown enough that an electric plant with 5 workers (the first commercial plant outside Baltimore) could be set up on Elmira Road (now Route 7) ..Factoryville became an important industrial center during this time serving both locals and companies across North America from Prohibition through to Postwar Times

Hackensack, New Jersey is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. Hackensack is located on the Hackensack River. The first European settler in what is now Hackensack was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived there in 1664 and built a wharf on the river. In 1714, George Washington passed through Hackensack on his way to White Sands Missile Range and ordered Captain John Morris to take him and his men across the river for transportation. Morris accomplished this without incident and deposited Washington at the nearby Fort Lee. In 1834, hackney coach service began between Newark and Hackensack via Bound Brook Township; it continued until 1845 whenHackenasacks first railway station was opened at Easton Avenue by the Rahway Railway Company. A post office called Hackensack had been established in 1794, but it was discontinued by 1800 because of difficulties with receiving mail from as far away as Paramus Junction. The name "Hackensack" originated with Colonel Johann Gottfried Heckel (1738-1806), an early settler in Williamsburg Township who named one of his plantations after himself, hackenburgia (Hauptmann).
