Guttenberg is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,362 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg is the largest city in Middlesex County and the second-largest city in New Jersey after Newark. It is home to Monmouth University and numerous small businesses and shopping districts. The Guttenberg Historic District includes many of the town's original buildings dating back to 1795. Guttenberg has been called "The Garden City" for its beautiful streetscape and green spaces as well as its strong economy. Guttenberg was first settled by German Americans in 1795. The area that became Guttenburg was part of Bergen Township until 1834 when it became part of Middlesex County. In 1868, Guttenberg incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly due to its location on the new Jersey Turnpike which made it an easy market for goods exported from New York City. In 1928, guttenberg annexed parts of Far Hills Township including today's Parsippany section of Ridgefield Park In 1951, when Newton Township was disbanded due to consolidations within Middlesex County, Guttenberg took over all functions within Newton Township including law enforcement, fire suppression and street paving services In 1957, during a municipal reformation initiative spearheaded by Mayor James Boccaccio (D), all municipalities in Middlesex County were required to adopt a Municipal Charter with specific powers granted to each municipality such as authority to pass ordinances establishing regulations concerning waste management or building codes In 1978 Latham Borough merged into gutttenburgh In 1984 Pascack Heights Borough merged into gutttenburgh In 1991 Lambertville Borough merged into gutttenburgh On January 1st 2002 Shorewood borough merged into gutttenburgh

Guttenberg, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg was named for Jacob Guttenberg (1785-1847), an entrepreneur and founder of the Guttenberg brewery. The first settlement in what is now Guttenberg was on the lower Hackensack River near present-day Northvale. By 1833, a group of Dutch farmers had bought land on the east side of the river and established an agricultural community known as "Hague". In 1837, English settlers arrived from England and founded West Orange. The early Dutch settlers were replaced by Germans who came to North America in large numbers during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1851, William Tilton organized a township which became part of Bergen County. On November 3, 1853, East Hackensack Township was formed from parts of West Orange and Hague with its own government; it remained separate until 1886 when it merged into Guttenberg Borough. In 1860, guttenbergans began to arrive in significant numbers due to increased religious immigration from Germany through Holland; by 1870 they constituted 20% of all residents in Bergen County. German culture started to permeate throughout the town beginning with banana harvesting parties during summertime that would take place on private farms around Rupert's Valley northwest of town center. The most famous incident took place when beer brewer Jacob Gundenberger founded his brewery here in 1865; he used local fruit bats as fermenters since no breweries existed yet that could do so safely. This event helped create a strong sense of German identity within Guttenberg which continues today among its citizens descendants as well as many businesses located here such as Dunder Mifflin Paper Company which originated from here back in 1893). Guttenberg is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg was first settled by Germans in the early 18th century, and became an English municipality in 1865. Guttenberg is located on the southern tip of Teaneck Township, near Lakehurst and Ridgewood. The Guttenberg area played an important role in American history as one of the original townships of Middlesex County. Its founders – many of whom were German immigrants – helped create what is now northeastern New Jersey. From 1795 to 1800, Guttenberg served as a county seat for Middlesex County. As part of Essex County, Guttenberg was known as "the pearl of Essex". In 1814, it became part of Union County following the creation of that county from portions of Middlesex and Union counties. The town's second courthouse was built in 1832 and still stands today within its boundaries; its first courthouse had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. In 1907, Morgan Guaranty Trust Company (later Morgan Stanley) opened its largest office ever in Newark at One Broad Street across from the old train station there; guttenbergernewark@gmai nj.com remains their website address to this day. The company relocated again to Princeton, New Jersey after World War II but continued to maintain a presence until 1994 when it merged with Bankers Trust Corporation (now JP Morgan Chase).
Guttenberg was founded in 1688 by German settlers who named it for the Guttenberg family, which had settled there in the early 17th century. The town grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming one of the most important agricultural towns in New Jersey. Guttenberg was incorporated as a city on April 14, 1916. The city's original boundaries were based on what is now Broad Street and Washington Avenue. In 1949, the city annexed parts of Elizabethtown Township.
