Guttenberg is a town in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,613 at the 2010 census. Guttenberg forms part of the Camden-Passaic- hormone belt. It was established as a hamlet on the southern border of what is now Jersey City in 1814 by German immigrants and has since grown to become one of the most significant communities in Essex County. The Guttenberg area was first settled by Germans who arrived from Alsace-Lorraine in 1813. In 1814, they erected a small cabin known as "Guttenberg" on land that would later be annexed to Jersey City. A year later, they founded the village of Guttenberg which grew rapidly and had a population of 30 residents by 1830. By 1840, Guttenberg had over 200 residents and became an incorporated town with its own government. In 1846, it amalgamated with neighboring Passaic Township to form Essex County. In recent years, the community has experienced revitalization due to its location within walking distance of local universities and other cultural attractions; As well as strong support for various local causes such as arts & music festivals and food drives.

The Guttenberg area was first settled by German immigrants in 1732 and was originally called "Gutenburg". The name change came about because of a land grant to the Guttenberg family from Nicholas Guttenberg, one of Queen Anne's commissioners. In 1812, John Fenton bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) in what is now Guttenberg from Nicholas Guttenberg and renamed it Netherland Park after his home country. In 1814-1815, members of the New England Emigration Society founded a school in Netherland Park for German children who had families in New York City or elsewhere outside of Pennsylvania. For many years this school operated as the only educational institution for Germans living in Middlesex County. In 1868-1869, local entrepreneur Abraham Lincoln offered to sell two lots on Main Street near Eastonville Lake to create a town center with business and social amenities that would be accessible to all citizens regardless of race or color. The township was organized on April 12th 1870 under the name "Guttenberg Township", but no town center ever materialized; today there are few remaining reminders of that early effort except for some old buildings along Route 9W close to where Lincoln's lot once stood. In 1886-1887, Henry Clay Frick built an iron works east of present day Green Lane which became one of America's largest industrial enterprises and played an important role in creating northern Newark during its heyday as a manufacturing center before World War II. Guttenberg residents helped support Frick's company until he departed for good after sales scandals led to Bethlehem Steel taking over his enterprise; Guttenberg residents returned home soon after and kept their businesses open until he left again just prior to Bethlehem Steel closing down completely around 1920 due to strikes by workers at other companies nearby pitting Newark againstPhiladelphia].
