At that time the area was part of Salem Township and the town of Princeton. On January 1, 1834, Gloucester City became a township again when Morristown Township was divided into two sections. On July 24, 1881, the town of North Brunswick withdrew from NJ waters completely forming Cape May County while GloucesterCity remained within Middlesex County under charter form #3-1290 dated July 25th 1886 by Judge James Sibley MD (now Judge William J Sibley), following enactment of NJ Legislature 3rd Session No H5649 filed February 9th 1886 which read “That all townships within this State having boundaries not including any part or part only of Cape May County hereby withdraw from said county and become an independent municipality”; leaving behind it Morris Township comprising parts still within Cape May County but with full powers over its affairs as outlined hereinbelow In 1916 during World War I General Order No 106 issued by Ulysses S Grant stated that all German American citizens living on Christmastime in New Jersey would be rounded up and sent back to Germany without trial or explanation; however no such roundup took place as many people had already left for war purposes before this order was given

As Gloucester City grew more established as a community during the early 1800s, it attracted people from all over New Jersey including those from nearby Trenton and Camden municipalities as well as other parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. These migrants brought with them their own cultures, religions and economic opportunities which helped make Gloucester City one of the most successful communities in New Jersey during this time period. During World War II (1939-1945), many residents of Gloucester City enlisted in military service or volunteered for national defense projects such as working on construction projects along I-95 or serving as farm laborers on Army bases scattered throughout New Jersey. Many residents also took advantage of wartime job opportunities offered by local businesses such as war production plants or munitions factories located throughout central NJ). After World War II ended, many returning soldiers helped rebuild the city followingriegel years of economic hardship caused by prohibitionism within New Jersey society at large As tensions against each other increased across America during this era – particularly after Reconstruction – some semblance of order returned to GloucesterCity thanks largely to organized crime activity within its borders which until then had been relatively unregulated .
