Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city of over 50,000 people located in the eastern section of New Jersey on the Raritan River. The city was founded in 1704 by farmers who built a sawmill and gristmill on the river. In 1814, Gloucester City became a town and in 1846 it became a city. The National Guard moved to Gloucester City from Newark in 1908. From 1916 until 1978, the National Guard Armory was used as headquarters for the New Jersey State Police Department. The original millinery shop, now known as Old Millinery Hall, was built around 1760 by Nicholas Trotter and his wife Catherine Trotter. It served as an inn until 1786 when it became the home of John Atherton and his wife Susanna Whitefield Atherton. The hall later served as a schoolhouse before becoming an armory in 1908 when it was donated by Captain Fenton Waddell to the New Jersey State Police Department. The first national guard unit stationed in Gloucester City was Company K (1st Battalion) which arrived at Camp Cresson on October 15th, 1916. Company K operated out of Camp Cresson until March 1918 when they were redesignated Company I (2nd Battalion). During World War I Company K participated in many battles including Battle of Belleau Wood where they singlehandedly destroyed more than 100 enemy machine guns with just twelve men killed and thirty-six wounded; Battle of Argonne Forest where they captured three machineguns; and Battle of reductions at Chateauguay where they helped to repel an attack by fifty German soldiers with machine guns only five miles from their position

Gloucester City is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. Gloucester City is the county seat of Middlesex County. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what would become Gloucester City were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624 who named it "New Amsterdam" after New Netherland which they had just discovered. In 1764, when William Pitts moved his headquarters from London to Newark and then Trenton, he recommended that the new capital of New Jersey be located in what was then called "the old town", now known as downtown Philadelphia. In 1794, when George Washington became President of the United States, he appointed John Adams as Governor of New Jersey on recommendation of General James Ketchum who said that Adams would make "a most efficient governor". In 1814 Nicholas Cooley built a grist mill on the confluence of the Delaware and Susquehanna Rivers in what is now downtown Gloucester City for grinding corn for local farmers. On October 15th 1817 John Davenport opened a store at Fifth and Market Streets as one of two stores open in Pennsylvania Township (now Clearfield Township) north-west of center by way of I-95/I-280/US-6 services Routes 471/472 which connected with today's I-95 southbound lanes close to where Fourth Street crosses Market Street; this store became known as Davenport's Store after its founder's death in 1827. On November 25th 1800 James Caldwell purchased 640 acres eastward along Third Street from Nicholas Cooley in present day Union Township (now West Deptford Township) for $2 an acre – this land later became home to Caldwell’s Mills Manufacturing Company which manufactured flour until World War II when it switched to manufacturing munitions products such as shells and bombs Guided Missile Systems). On December 12th 1800 Captain John Stevens bought 2 more acres from Caldwell for $10 per acre – this land also became home to Stevens' Landing Light House Museum (later renamed Guide Star Museum), founded by Captain Stevens himself soon afterwards during his service with American Naval Forces during World War II as commander at Norfolk Navy Yard before becoming director general lighthouse board at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Corporation having retired from naval service following hostilities ended on August 14th 1945 aboard USS Ponce off Nantucket Island US Virgin Islands - hereafter Guide Star Museum shipwrecked museum since 1996 while still moored offshore near present day Point Pleasant Beach NJ). Thereafter preceding history Repeats itself - herein Stated History Of Gloucester City And Its People... It should be noted however that not all prior owners or occupants or descendants thereof have been mentioned herein duly omitted thereby disclaiming any responsibility whatsoever should any error occur therein...A full list could take many pages but will suffice heretofore... At first there were only three settlements: Northampton Townsite; Southwick Boroughsite; and virginiasite Settlement Ground but these soon grew into over sixty small farming families primarily engaged chiefly in agriculture but also some quarrying, smelting works etc., purchasing other lands subject thereto through bartering or purchase by purchase etc., extending their boundaries hitherwith somewhat generally until about 1775 when Worcester Township was formed outgrowth thereof viz.: Northumberland | Hunterdon | Monmouthshire | Cumberland |Bedfordshire |Albany [and]Gloucestershire

It is the county seat of Middlesex County and the second-largest city in New Jersey after Newark. The first Europeans to sight what would become Gloucester City were Native Americans who built a small fort on the present-day site of Central Park in 1664. In 1836, New York's governor William Walker proposed that Gloucester City be chartered as a borough within Middlesex County. The proposal was not accepted because it would have given Susquehanna River Valley residents more representation than those living in townships located east of Philadelphia. In 1837, commissioners from Linden Township recommended that Gloucester City be chartered as an independent municipality with its own government and police force. The idea gained momentum and on February 15, 1839, Gloucester City became an incorporated town with a population of 10 citizens – making it one of the smallest municipalities in New Jersey at that time. During World War II, the city played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production. For example, General Motors Assembly Plant (now part of Delphi Automotive) was located here and Essex Corporation manufactured radios and other electronic equipment during this time period. After World War II ended and many factories closed down due to deindustrialization throughout North America, Gloucester City experienced economic decline until about 2000 when it began to experience modest growth rate again thanks to family-owned businesses such as Sam’s Club and Jiffy Lube alike which have brought new life into the cityscape over the past decade or so through development projects such as office parks and light industrial areas near Route 22/Newark Avenue gridlock
Gloucester City was founded in 1764 by General George Washington and Captain John Stevens. The city's first mayor was James K. Polk and its first councilmember was John S. Goode. In 1847, the city became part of Uniontown Township, which merged into Union County in 1857. The city population grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century, reaching a peak of 200,000 in 1920. However, the city's population plummeted in the 1930s due to economic factors such as World War II and the Great Depression. By 1940, Gloucester City had a population of only 15,000 people. In 1951, the New Jersey Legislature designated Gloucester City as a center for economic development within Union County; this led to an increase in government spending on behalf of the city throughout the 21st century. In 2016, Mayor Tony Rinaldi announced plans to add about 10 acres (40 hectares) of land to help make Gloucester City more sustainable and vibrant; this will bring new jobs and additional funding to the city coffers.
