Gloucester City, NJ is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 18,181. The name comes from English author and historian Robert Devereux who lived there for some time in the early 17th century. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Gloucester City were Captain John Smith and his expedition in 1608-09. From this arrival until 1814 only French people lived there. In 1814 the United States acquired what is now New Jersey as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolutionary War. During this time many colonial families moved to new settlements throughout America including some to what is now Gloucester City where they founded businesses or settled down among their own people. The first school in Gloucester City was established on February 3rd, 1815 by Rev Dr George Whitehurst with six students from Princeton University as its first teacher and one student from Newark Academy. It served an area extending from Broad Street eastward to Market Street and westward to Greenwich Avenue (now Livingston Avenue). This school remained open until May 15th, 1821 when it burned down due to a fire that started in a barn near where it stood today. Reverend Whitehurst had been using this barn as his home while he taught at Princeton University during term break which created quite a stir among students and teachers alike! He rebuilt the school starting on October 2nd of that year with 30 students attending morning classes before going into afternoon recesses at 1pm sharp each day until finally ending classes on Thursday evening around 7pm; thus teaching through most days except for Thursdays! This type of instruction allowed children living within walking distance of classrooms or having access to transportation (and often both) to attend these important public institutions without feeling too locked out! On November 10th, 1824 Mr James Allerton purchased land comprising present day eastern border of Gloucester City from Abraham Fishwick for $1/acre (equivalent at that time to about $118/acre). This purchase marked an important milestone as it gave Allerton control over all land between Camden County lines east and west along Raritan Bayou including much property currently within boundaries of Edison Township and Newark Borough since those towns were organized following annexation by Camden County during the late 19th century. Allerton also developed another parcel of land north-west of present day downtown mentioned earlier which became known as “The Hill” later renamed Park Place after Allerton died suddenly while riding horseback up The Hill towards Brunswick on July 11th 1865 aged 53 years old leaving no heir apparent; making him one of America’s earliest private landowners with significant holdings outside populated areas such as southeastern Pennsylvania whence he may have come originally! A number buildings located within modern-day downtownGloucester City were constructed during these early years: The original Post Office building still stands today (rebuilt several times), First Presbyterian Church built between 1830 and 1840 (relocated here after its original location across Broad Street was destroyed by a tornado in 1902), Market House built between 1830 and 1840 also relocated here after its original location across Broad Street was destroyed by a tornado in 1902), Stroud Building erected between 1830-35 also relocated here after its original location across Broad Street was destroyed by a tornado in 1902), Gifford Building erected c1830 also relocated here after its original location across Broad Street was destroyed by a tornado in 1902) – all three are still standing today.] These buildings helped kick off what would become oneOf America’s most vibrant downtown communities characterized primarily by lively nightlife options enjoyed BY ALL GLOUCESTEONERS OF ALL AGES!] In addition various other commercial establishments grew up around these initial functions such as beauty parlors (− notably Lulu Belle + Co., opened 1861], movie theaters ([the Community Theatre opened March 12th 1898]), post office (+[First National Bank] merged into [UPS] 1951)), grocery stores ([Duncan's Grocery store opened December 5th 1912]), dry goods STORES (+[Lincoln Dry Goods Store] merged into [JBL Radio Company]) - virtually every business imaginable sprouted up during this period right alongside burgeoning residential districts [such as “Downtown Glenwoodie” which extended south past today’s Tappan Zee Bridge heading east until reaching Ridge Road just south Of Main Streets intersection then continuing south along Ridge Road becoming increasingly less dense until eventually terminating atwhat is now Saw Mill Creek Boulevard] . What began once being exclusively residential developments transitioned over time into more pedestrian friendly neighborhoods characterized primarily by large parkslands comprising blocks upon blocks suburban style housing developments continued growing adjacent thereto although denser than contemporaneous Downtown Glenwoodie ] However despite having more diverse economic sectors beginning with numerous small businesses filling various needs throughout social services [+school lunchrooms], healthcare [+Newark General Hospital operated out side city Limits 1965 - present day], etc., retail storefront openings remaining nearly exclusively high end boutiques (- notable exceptions include Macy's Department Store opening 1963 insideOldCity limits next door on Rahway riverfront)] Although Downtown Glenwoodie has experienced occasional increases (>15%) or decreases (<5%) overall crime rates relative thereto since 2000 according To FBI Crime Reports data published annually([2002 & 2006]) relatively few major retail retailers have closed operations withinArticles closertopresenttime...although certain smaller stores situated elsewhere within centralGloucesteon have seen closures resultingfrom competition from larger local rivals]. Gloucester City, New Jersey is a city located in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 56,545 at the 2010 census. The name of the city was given to it by General George Washington and is derived from Old Gloucester Township in Monmouth County which was also named for him. It is the second largest city in Camden County after Camden. The area that makes up today's Gloucester City was first settled by English colonists in 1664 as part of what would become Westchester County. At first, the settlers were subsistence farmers who grew corn and beans on their farms. As other parts of New Netherland became populated with Dutch and French people, the British began to explore this new area and decided to make it their own colony. They named this new land "New Gloucester" after Sir George Carteret, Governor of Rhode Island at the time. In 1701, when Jameson’s Treaty ended war between Great Britain and France, British traders came through Westchester County looking for trade goods such as fur coats and cannons that they could sell back to France. One of these traders was Nicholas Massaert who traded with both France and England before he moved his business to Newark (now part of Newark). When he arrived in Philadelphia in 1701 he learned about an opportunity for a rich man’s daughter - Elizabeth Woolridge - to marry an Englishman instead of going home to her father because she had been promised one million pounds sterling if she did so. The girl married John Tryon who then set out on a grand tour of America along with his brother-in-law Lord Dunmore where they explored all sorts of different settlements including those in Pennsylvania before finally settling near what is now Wilmington (Delaware). When Tryon landed here he erected a tree near what is now Market Street which still stands today as one of the earliest landmarks within town limits! As more English people started arriving here they began farming sugarcane plantations which became very profitable during this time period because sugar cane could be grown anywhere there were natural resources available like coalitions trees or tidal water waves! In 1814 an act was passed by Congress establishing a school district within Chesterfield Township called "West Chesterfield Academical Society". This society offered free tuition for students from poor families which helped attract talented young ladies such as Harriet Beecher Stowe who later wrote “ Uncle Tom's Cabin” while living nearby in 1851! After years of being underdeveloped due mainly to lack of investment from entrepreneurs willing to move here – due mostly towards larger cities such as Trenton or Princeton – Gloucester City experienced some significant growth starting around World War II when many veterans returning home found work opportunities hereabouts thanks largely to wartime production shortages! Afterward things slowed down again until recently when economic conditions have begunto improve again throughout much of 2016-2017; however recent news indicating increased crime rates has led some townspeople(especially men)to feel anxious about possible future decline although Mayor Fergus Murphy says no major plans are currently underway regarding shrinking or disbanding any departments/units within town government; nonetheless Mayor Murphy remains committedtowork togetheratively despite challenges encountered during past year The history behind present day Gloucester City dates back several hundred years ago when its namesake General George Washington surveyed areas east side Monmouth Creek where modern day downtown exists today following his victory over Native Americans at Mount Vernon on November 8th, 1777! Founding fathers John Dickinson & James Kieft owned large tracts adjoining modern day Gloucester City Limits & donated them back unto our township thru deedrestricted conveyance dated October 4th 1800 mutual consenting thereto viz: To wit: A tract bounded northerly by Broad Street running thence easterly unto Fishkill Creek flowing into said creek aforesaid; thence southwesterly unto Point Pleasant Beach extending thence northeastward 10 rods; thence northwesterly 10 rods across said creek & point thereof into our midst bounded westerly by Fort Mifflin Park following said road line described hereinabove pro rata share equally between each subscribing party making two third selections therein? map attached showing boundaries...To wit: That piece containing DowntownGloucestershire bounded northerly by Fort Mifflin Park along plank Road Line mentioned above pro rata share equally between each subscribing party making two thirds selections therein... map attached

The city became an American settlement in 1814 and was named for General James Clinton of the British army who fought at Yorktown. The city's first store was opened in 1815.
