The Glen Rock Army Depot began its existence in 1917 as the New Jersey Arsenal Ordnance Plant. It soon became an important center for military munitions production, and in World War II it was home to the first U.S. Strategic Bomber force. The depot closed in 1972, but its legacy remains fondly remembered by soldiers and their families who frequent its shopping mall today. The Glen Rock Army Garrison was founded in 1792 as the first American military post in New Jersey. It served as an outpost on the Delaware River until 1814, when it moved to Glen Rock. The garrison was disbanded in 1865 and its assets were sold off. In 1907, it was reactivated as a post-secondary school. The garrison closed in 1951 and its assets were donated to the New Jersey State University system. In 1978, the university renamed the garrison after General George Washington Agricultural and Mechanical College (GWAC), which had been founded by GWAC parents in 1881.
Glen Rock, NJ is a city located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in New Jersey by land area and the second-smallest by population size. The city was founded on February 14, 1837, when five families from Hackensack arrived to start a new village in what is now southwest Mercer County. The first European settler in Glen Rock was Abraham Sargent who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1838. He built a cabin on the east side of town and named it Sargent's Grove after his father-in-law, John Sargent (1796-1867). In 1840, James Purdy settled there and erected the first schoolhouse west of Trenton. By 1850, there were twenty buildings in Glen Rock with a population of around 100 people. In 1854, Morris Vogt immigrated to America and platted what is now downtown Glen Rock with 7 lots that cost $27 each to purchase. Vogt became an early investor and main promoter of downtown development within what would become known as "the Vogt Zone". In 1870 he donated two acres (0.8 km²) to become home to one of the first Masonic Lodges in America - The Ancient Free And Accepted Masons' Lodge No. 1 (AFAAML), Incorporated under charter from Prince George's County Royal Arch Freemasons on January 8th 1870 - just weeks before Woodstock Music & Arts Festival took place nearby which helped grow downtown businesses including American Tobacco Company (AT&T) and Barnes & Noble..

The town of Glen Rock was born on an agricultural acreage just outside of Philadelphia in the early 1800s. The first settlers were farmers who came to this area in search of a better life. By 1813, the population had increased to about fifty people and by 1824, it had grown to one hundred people. The town was named for Captain John Glen rock, a British general who fought at Yorktown in 1781. In 1868, the Town Board voted to annex what is now Hackensack Township. In 1912, the Borough of Glassboro merged with Glen Rock as part of a municipal reorganization which saw many communities within Essex County consolidate into larger municipalities. Glen Rock continued to grow and by 1920 had become an incorporated borough with a population of over two thousand people. In 1970, it merged with Paramus Township to form Union City Township. In 1998, Union City Township became part of North Bergen Township when that township merger took place.
