Glassboro is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Glassboro is part of the Newark–Trenton-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township was formed from portions of Rahway and West Orange Township on July 1, 1838. The first permanent settler in Glassboro was Nicholas Biddle who landed there in 1784 with his family. The Biddles were one of the original families to move to America from Great Britain via what is now known as Ellis Island. On October 14, 1824, John Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land along the Delaware River for $5 per acre (0.20 peso/km²). This purchase made Fenton one of the largest landowners in central New Jersey and helped spur development around what would become Glassboro. Fenton's grandson George Washington Fenton founded the glass works at Pascack Valley on his estate in 1837 which produced many different types of glass including vases and lamps before becoming a subsidiary of Morrisglass company located in Philadelphia that produced glassware for various embassies worldwide until its bankruptcy in 1958. From here onwards, many other companies such as Reynolds & Curtis developed throughout Glassboro over time including Delmarva Glass Company (now Delmarva Allied Industries), First American Paper Products (now JCPenney), GASCO Engineering Company and State Collegeulexchange Corporation among others In 1862, Captain Samuel Atherton began developing land east of present day Route 9 south of Amboy Road into what would become Glassboro Township when he donated 350 acres (1 km²) to the township trustees for this purpose In 1865 while surveying lands donated by Judge John Ladds during Reconstruction days within present day Clifton Township boundaries he found three small townships - Rahway Cornerstone settlement being located just off CR 9 north between SR 812 heading east towards Princeton; West Orange Junction settlement being located southwest corner between CR 920 heading west towards East Brunswick then northwesterly along CR 813 heading northeast; Lancaster Landing settlement being located directly northwest corner existing today's intersection between US 1 Business Extension and Route 2 North several miles southwest of Lancaster then continuing northeastward past Rte 2 intersecting Route 3 thence northerly extending into present dayGlassborougher Street where it splits into two branches one going east joining Chesterfield Borough then continuing southeastward meeting Park Avenue soon thereafter forming an interchange with I-95 South near Trenton; Ansonia Landing establishment situated about midway between Routes 1A & 1B approximately midway through current Ansonia Boulevard alignment leavingCR 208 opposite Ansonia Landing soon thereafter forming an interchange with I-295 South near Trenton . Glassboro, New Jersey is a borough in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the borough's population was 14,782. Glassboro was first settled in 1784 by Germans who had come overland from Germany. The town was named for David Glasson and Paulus Glasson, two owners of a farm near Sharpsburg. The first glass factory in America was established in Glassboro by James Watt and his brother Anthony Watt on December 12, 1814. It produced jugs and other bottles made of pottery- glazed earthenware and enameled ware- at the site until 1850 when it moved to Morristown because of American competition. The town became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century with breweries such as Pemberton & Son (now Browning) Manufacturing Company (1862), Pemberton Brewery (1868), Fenton Brewing Company (1910), M&M Brewery (1920), Sheffield Brewing Company (1925) and Brunswick Brewery Incorporated (1930). In 1922, Glassboro merged with nearby Paramus to form Paramus–Glassboro Borough. In 1970, the Borough added its current name to reflect its unique history—glassmaking being one of its earliest industries—and expanded into Allendale Township along Route 16 east of Interstate 95. Today Glassborough is home to more than 15 businesses including three glass factories: Baird & Laughlin Corporation which produces window panes; Allied Metals Corporation which manufactures steel products; and SmithKline Beecham which manufactures Healthcare products including mouthwash and toothpaste
