Glassboro is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,914 at the 2010 census. Glassboro was part of the Bergen County seat before it was moved to Paramus in 1998. The borough is named for John Woolridge Glass, who had land in what is now Glassboro and developed an estate there in 1836. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glassboro were Dutch traders from Helderberg on Long Island who landed in 1624 and established a trading post there. In 1707, British colonists settled around present-day Glassboro and constructed small fortifications there as they prepared for war with France. The British abandoned their posts near present-dayParamus after the French defeat at Yorktown in 1781 (the Treaty of Paris). In 1821, George Washington founded Princeton University on stone farmsteads north of present-dayGlassboro Borough limits. A year later,Congress passed the Morrill Land Grant Act which gave lands east of Newark to Rutgers University and west of Camden to Princeton University. Rutgers then built a road from Trenton to Princeton that crossed through what are now Glassboro Township and Paramus Township; this road became known as the Princeton Road. In 1834, James Kapp donated 1,500 acres (500 ha) along today's Route 202 east of Paramus Township toglassborough trustees for use as a town square; Kapp also donated land for public schools and other civic improvements adjacent to his property. The township was formed by taking parts of two earlier townships: Monmouth Township (northwest corner), gained by merger with Rahway Township on December 15, 1888; and Woodbridge Township (southwest corner), gained by merger with Hackensack on January 3, 1895). On April 2nd1895 referendum voters approved annexation by Jersey City following its incorporation as an independent city nine days earlier.
