Glassboro, New Jersey is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Glassboro is located on the eastern edge of the county and is bordered by Rahway to the north, Elizabeth to the east, and North Woodbury to the south. It is part of the East Rutherford–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Glassboro was George Washington Williams who founded a farm there in 1786. The United StatesCongress passed a resolution on July 4th, 1814 recognizing Glassboro as an independent city after it had petitioned for recognition from Congress six times between 1807 and 1814 without success. On December 12th of that year, Mayor John Fenton laid out streets and named them after prominent citizens of Philadelphia: Nathaniel Wexler (Chairman ofthe Board of Trade), Asahel Parsons (founder of Penn Federal Savings Bank), William Smith (Governor of Pennsylvania), Nicholas-Jacques Conte (member from Jersey City) and James Sneath (British consul general). In 1819 Glassboro organized as a township with a population size limited to 100 residents. In 1870 it became an incorporated village with a population size limited to 375 residents On July 15th 1898 glassboroughers won their first case against American Tobacco Company when US District Court Judge Augustus Biddle ruled that under state law smoking could not be considered "a public exercise" withinGlassboro limits This decision led to passage by New Jersey's legislature later that year of an act prohibiting smoking in any public place inside or outside citieslimits
