Glassboro is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,808 at the 2010 census. Glassboro is located on the eastern edge of the township of Glassboro and on the southern border of Maplewood. It is bordered to the east by Camden Township and to the west by Sayreville. The first European settlers in what became Glassboro were Dutch farmers who established a farmstead there in 1672. The name "Glassborow" was given to them by General James Grant, who landed with his army at present-day Glassboro on November 10th, 1777 during the American Revolutionary War. In 1834, Glassboro became part of Morris County when it was created from parts of Bergen and Union counties. In 1876, it became a Borough within Bergen County and remained so until becoming an incorporated municipality in 1968. As a borough, Glassboro had no independent police department; its officers were instead provided by Morris County authorities responsible for patrol functions within that county. However, as an incorporated municipality, Glassboro began to have its own police force in 1984 under then-Mayor John Fenton (D). This force continued to be operated as an arm's length agency until 2003 when it was merged into municipal services provided by Bergen County government pursuant to then-Municipal Code section 7:3-10 et seq.. According to Census Bureau figures released in 2010, White residents made up 62% of glassborow's population while Black residents make up 34%. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 2%.
