In 1814, John Nicholson moved his family to what is now Garfield Township from Burlington Township and they were the first settlers there. He built a house on what is now Middle Road and later developed land around it which included present-day Thorntonville and parts of Thornton Park. In 1840, Samuel Parsons set up shop hereabouts and soon became one of the most successful merchants in the area. His store thrived until 1865 when an act of Congress made it illegal for citizens to carry firearms without a license. This led to many businesses closing down in this time period including Parsons’s business which went out of business after just two years.
