He also acquired lots for town development along Third Avenue (now Union street). At that time it consisted of only about 10 houses and 20 acres (8 ha). In 1836, Ben Franklin Garfield's son-in-law James Caldwell purchased Lots 9 & 10 in what is now center square after they had been abandoned by their earlier owner because Caldwell could not find anyone willing to work on them. This location became known as Caldwell Square due to this purchase alone. Thereafter many residents donated additional acreage for town development including: Fourth Avenue between Market Street and State Road 7 (now Ansonia Road); Fifth Avenue between State Road 7 (now Interstate 95) and Broadwalk Boulevard; Sixth Avenue between Broadwalk Boulevard and Market Street; Seventh avenue between Eighth avenue (now Park Ave.)and Ninth avenue where today's library stands
