Garfield was founded by George Washington Garfield in 1795 as a small hamlet on the southern border of Chester County. Its first settler, John Harrison played an important role in its early development and helped found nearby Middletown in 1807. The town rapidly grew after annexation by Hunterdon County in 1838 and attained population levels not seen since the mid-19th century—reaching 10,000 by 1860. By 1870, much of what is now Garfield had been built out with several large mills sucking up water from rural creek beds for irrigation purposes; this made for some pleasant days during summer when all that could be heard were the screams of billy goats and donkeys running through the forest near where modern day Arlington Heights stands today. During World War II it became one of five towns located within hearing range of Manhattan’s bombing raids; many homes were destroyed or damaged but no lives were lost as a result of war efforts here unlike other areas which saw great destruction due to enemy action including New York City neighborhoods such as Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridgehead (which are still target zones today).
