Garfield is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a population of 44,723. The Garfield National Guard Armory is located in the city and was built as part of Project 78. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1973.

Garfield started as a farming community and was originally named for General Washington's Hessian general, Count von Steuben. The name change came about because of lawsuits involving the landowner. The first post office in Garfield opened on October 12, 1872. The Garfield School District served students in grades K-12 from 1984 to 2003 when it merged with Rockville Township Schools. In 2007, Gibbons Middle School was lost in consolidation with nearby West Egg Township and its students were transferred to Garfields former middle school buildings which are now used as the Gibbons High School gymnasium and football stadium. In 2009 both schools reopened as Garfield Jr./Sr High Schools after being closed for several years due to budget cuts by the state education department. Garfield was also home to one of the first air conditioning plants in America built by Overhead Air Service Company during World War II (later renamed American Electric Power).

Garfield is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Garfield was founded as a small settlement on the banks of the Delaware River by German immigrants in 1784. The name derived from gar (a piece of wood) and field (a tract of land). In 1825, the town became one of five townships within Mercer County, and it remained an unincorporated township until 1959 when it became a borough. The borough was dissolved on July 1, 2015 and its residents were given the right to vote in municipal elections that year. The first settler to arrive in what is now Garfield was Johann Friedrich Spranger who arrived in 1784 with his family from Germany. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Garfield". By 1800, there were 10-15 families living here. A post office called "Garfield" was established on December 3, 1800, and mail served both this community and nearby West Amboy. One account reports that “the first letter sent through this post office reached Philadelphia about noon” On February 27th 1825 Nathan Sargent donated land for a school which would serve as the cornerstone for what would become Garfield Elementary School; Mr Sargent also contributed money for other improvements to be made to the school including brick construction which still exists today on Harrison Boulevard across from Garfield High School (now known as Northridge Middle School). The first graduating class from Garfield Elementary School graduated in 1830; all but one attend college today! In 1827-28 Anthony Rapp played cricket for Princeton University against Rutgers College; he later coached them while they were still playing football at Princeton Stadium! After Garfields incorporation into Mercer County 2 years later on April 14th 1830 under new Township form & Act No 7 of 1830 two churches were erected here by Revs Henery Wells & John Fenton: First Congregational Church – Also known as Old Stone Presbyterian Church Today’s church stands where Village Hall used to stand opposite High Street back then before becoming home to Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church after being razed during developers attempt at turning Falconwood into an upscale development back in 2007!
