Small batch coffee history in Freehold, New Jersey began with the first coffee shop on Market Street in 1895. The business was started by a couple of Dutchmen who found and purchased an old mill. They roamed the area printing notices for farmers markets that offered fresh produce from the local farms. In 1903, they opened their second location onusrthe corner of High and Market Streets. From here, they sold all kinds of coffee beans and brewed a variety of different drinks to account for the many customers who frequented their businesses. In 1930, another small business opened up at 5th and Maple Streets called Java Junction Coffee & Tea Company which served sandwiches as well as coffee. This was followed by The Dutch Gourmet Coffee Shop on North Brunswick Avenue in 1944 which became one of the most popular small businesses in Freehold Township because it offered a wide selection of coffees, pastries, milk products and other items. In 1951, freeholders passed a resolution declaring that “Java Junction Coffee & Tea Company” be renamed “The Dutch Gourmet Coffee Shop” to reflect its long history within the township. Many people remember when The Dutch Gourmet Coffee Shop was located at 5th and Maple Streets because it was known for its namesake roast: Indonesian Sumatra speciality coffee beans made fresh daily by our own team of roasters. In 1845, businessman John Stevens started making his own coffee at his store on Market Street in Freehold Township. He called his beans "John Stevens' Coffee." It wasn't until the early 1900s that someone else began to make this type of coffee - it was then that Dutchman Cornelius Hennepin opened his own business called The Dutch Koffee House on Smith Boulevard in East Brunswick Township. By 1910, most of the town's businesses had closed down due to prohibition (the US Prohibition Act). However, a few people kept busy roasting and selling their beans until recently - some still using old-time methods like hand pulling and pressing whole bean coffees into cups.

Freehold, located in Middlesex County, New Jersey was one of the first towns in the United States. Redevelopment of freehold land in the township began with a group of farmers who leased some of the land to other entrepreneurs, such as A.P. The first development in Freehold was an apartment complex built on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard, which became known as "The White House." In 1951, the Township Council passed a resolution authorizing the Township Manager to sell all or part of its lands within Freehold Township for use in developing new residential areas outside the township limits. This plan led to the creation of Ringwood Gardens and Shawangunk Park in neighboring townships, which were much larger than Freehold Township and allowed for more extensive development without violating zoning laws. As population growth slowed throughout the late 20th century and early 21st century, many residents chose to move away from Freehold Township altogether. In 2000, only 2% of New Jersey's population lived in villages or townships with less than 1,000 residents; by contrast, over 50% resided within one-half mile (800 meters) of a major city or metropolitan area. As a result, most residents now live within boroughs or cities that are close to their homes rather than within freehold territory
