Freehold is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 58,592. The name freehold was first mentioned in 1676. The first Europeans to visit Freehold were French traders and colonists who came to trade with the local Native Americans in 1676. In 1727, Freehold became part of Rahway Township. In 1814, Freehold became an independent borough and was merged into Union Township on April 15 of that year. On February 14, 1868, Freehold incorporated as a village within Union Township. It was annexed by Parsippany Township on November 12 of that year. The township's namesake is George Washington Irving who lived there from 1824 to 1830 and wrote some of his best-known poems about it including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "A Week in May". The Livingston family ran a mill here until it closed in 1916 due to high water levels caused by Hurricane Sandy. On July 1st, 2007, voters passed legislation establishing the township's $500 million bond referendum which would have raised money for infrastructure projects such as road repairs and new homes developments throughout the township as well as making other necessary changes such as increasing taxes by 2%. The referendum failed but did generate public outcry against what many saw as overspending on government services while failing to address pressing issues facing residents such as dwindling funding for schools and a lack of jobs opportunities outside the township limits

Freehold is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 37,838 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Middlesex County and the most populous town within Union County. The first European settlers in what is now Freehold were Dutchmen who arriving on horseback from New Netherland in 1664. They named their new settlement "Hudson's Landing" after George Washington's landing on Hudson River in 1609. The first permanent English residents of Freehold were men called Woodbridge by Captain John Smith when he visited the area in 1702. These early settlers founded a small village near present-day Union City and began to build homes there around 1710–1712. In 1766, during the American Revolution, General James Wolfe's army crossed the Delaware River at Cheboygan and moved into what is now Freehold Township along with 1,500 other British soldiers under cover of darkness to avoid being discovered by Patriot forces loyal to George Washington. The battle that ensued here became one of the bloodiest fought during America's war for independence. Aftermath of the battle led to Father Marquette’s founding of Loyola University (now La Salle) in West Orange and numerous new settlements sprang up around it including Easton (founded by Jesuit Fathers Marquette and de Montfort), Hackensack (founded by David Ross), Plainsboro (founded by Peter Minuit), Gardiner (founded by Jonathan Boucher), North Brunswick (founded by Nicholas Noyes), Cherry Hill (founded by Nicholas Warren) and South Brunswick (born as Bound Brook). In 1813, following his victory over Napoleonic France at Yorktown, General Robert Ewing bought 2 miles () east ofpresent-day Freehold from Native American leader Anthony Wayne for $1 million (). As part of this purchase, Ewing designated land east of Union City as “Ewing’s Forest” which became today’s township center – one mile from present-day Route 9A off Interstate 95 . The first schools opened in what is now Freehold Township on October 15th,, 1814 with 4 students attending Haverstock School located two miles west of present day Route 9A off Interstate 95 . In 1818 an academy was started in Plainfield also known as Indian Head Academy where many eminent Americans such as Andrew Jackson attended classes until its closure due to lack of funding three years later In 1822 an additional school was started called Plainfield Academy which merged with Indian Head Academy four years later becoming known as Plainfield High School On July 1st 1825 all schools within Union County closed because Congress refused to appropriate money for education purposes during a time when state legislatures throughout America were controlled through appropriations made through President James K Polk In 1830 Abraham Lincoln moved from Springfield IL spending several months living among Native Americans before finally settling down permanently in Elmira NY In 1840 Isaac Newton came down from Vermont settling near present day Easton NJ He soon set up shop selling goods door to door helping start what would become known as Newark Pennsylvanian Furniture Company One half mile south off I 95 next to existing Newark Armory plant
The first European to arrive in what is now Freehold Township was Nicholas-Jacques Cartier in 1637. The township was organized on February 14, 1814 by Order of the New Jersey Legislature. The township's first school was built on West Seventh Street in 1815 and it served students from Freehold and neighboring townships. The school remained operational until 1847, when it was closed due to financial difficulties. In 1865, the building that housed the school burned down and replaced with a new one. On October 1, 1905, Freehold Township became a part of Middlesex County. On June 15, 1911, Freehold Township passed an ordinance authorizing the establishment of a high school in the town center for students from all over Middlesex County. The high school opened for business on September 15th of that year and soon became known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School. In 1933, freeholders voted to annex most of Monmouth County into the township so that it would have more power to control its own finances and infrastructure. This annexation never happened because Monmouth County voters opposed it; however, some residents did move into Monmouth County during this time period because they felt their home county would be better off without them.
