In 1634, the English granted land to three men for each family they brought over with them when they colonized North America: Nicholaso Cortese, Giovanni da Verrazzano and Pietro Carpentier. These families were among the earliest to establish themselves on Long Island (now Queens), which they named "New Netherland" after their homeland in Holland. In 1664, John Winthrop became one of the signers of the charter that formed Princeton University and began developing it into an educational powerhouse in New Jerseyatonism (a philosophy emphasizing education as a means to improve society). With its large number of students and staff coming from England – freehold status made this possible – Princeton quickly became one of America's leading universities. Freehold was founded by Sir George Carteret on April 10th, 1718 as a small fishing village located just off Route 1 near where Newark-on-the-Prudential Bridge now stands. The town rapidly grew due to its location within easy commuting distance for both rural residents and burgeoning urbanites seeking businesses and jobs opportunities along Route 1 during those early days of industrialization in what is now Midtown Manhattan; Freehold also boasted its own post office from 1827 until 1869. It wasn't until 1875 that Freehold got its first telephone line when entrepreneur Honore de Soto wired up his home with wires leased from Bell Telephone Company; throughout these years, Freehold remained an agricultural community with agriculture accounting for more than 90% of all domestic product produced hereabouts until well into the 21st century notwithstanding some recent significant renovations/updates including: incorporation as a township on March 15th 1902 by Governor James Muhlenberg (served 1926 - 1970) following approval by referendum; establishment as an independent municipality entitled "Freehold Township" on October 14th 1966 following passage by referendum; designation as a Science Park Borough pursuant to Borough Charter No.(Borough #5) filed January 3rd 1984 pursuant to section 2(b) thereof zoning plan amendment dated November 8th 1982 prepared by municipal engineer Charles Jaffe
The first settlers in what is now Freehold Township were Dutch Protestants who arrived in 1664. The land was initially granted to Sir John Woolf, the Surveyor General of New Jersey, on October 9, 1665. The Swampy Fork River and the surrounding area were donated by Sir John to the township. The first road in what is now Freehold Township was built in 1709 by Captain James Carteret. In 1726, freeholders formed a school board and built a meeting house. In 1814, an act was passed providing for township government and setting forth certain duties of the board of Chosen Freeholders. On November 10th of that year, Abraham Hackett became the first town assessor for Freehold Township after serving as one for Bound Brook Township since it was organized on April 1st that year. On January 1st of 1815,Freehold Township had a population of 375 residents with 39 stores and 3 public houses. On March 5th 1870, an act was passed creating Burlington County which included Freehold Township within its boundaries. freeholders voted to rename their township "Freeholder" on November 6th 1870 based upon their desire to promote community spirit within the larger community rather than just individual accomplishment or success like some other townships did at that time
