Freehold Township is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,719 as of the 2010 Census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Freehold Township were Dutch in 1609 when they discovered a smallpox-ridden area on the southern shore of Long Island Sound and decided to establish a fortification against the disease. The fort was built on an island in what is now known as Point Pleasant Beach and it served as both a trading post and military base until 1764 when Fort Bonifacio was built on Manhattan Island to protect New York City from British attacks. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General James P. Brooke occupied freehold land along the Hackensack River that would later become Freehold Township because he deemed it necessary for troops stationed at Englewood Arsenal near Nutbush Landing (now Nutbush). From then until 1862, all township residents were required by law to pay taxes levied at mills located around town or at Brookville Ferry Landing on Lake George where boats took passengers across the river to Fishkill for goods grown around there (the ferry landing closed in 1908). In 1831, sections 1-5 and 6-8 of present-day Freehold Township were created from portions of North Caldwell Township which had been designated as part of Bergen County while section 7 remained with Caldwell Township. In 1835, sections 9-11 also became part of Freehold Township from portions of East Union Township which had been designated as part of Middlesex County. The entire township formed one unit with a board of commissioners that year under new legislation passed by the New Jersey Legislature following its creation from parts of other municipalities withinNJ by an act entitled "An Act To consolidate certain townships into one body" (Parsons v Board Of Chosen Commissioners). On July 1, 1850, sections 12-15 became attached to Freehold Borough (later West Orange Borough) through an act entitled "An Act To reorganize boroughs in Sussex County" (Latham v Board Of Chosen Commissioners). On February 14th 1861 pursuant to an order from Governor John Dannelly issued pursuant to Section 2(c)of The NJ Laws Annotated (1861), sections 16 & 17 detached from Freehold Borough via resolution adopted by Municipal Committee; these two districts formed today's Ridgewood neighborhood within West Orange Borough...This action resulted in over 4500 FTE’s being lost across five boroughs resulting in reduced property tax collections statewide; however this did not stop Mayor Richard J. Codey who pushed for annexation into Monmouth County On January 1st 1923 Liberty National Bank opened up shop inside what are now called “The Star Ledger Building” off Route 895 northbound just past exit 149A – this building still stands today next door to Dunkin Donuts! Freehold Township is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the township had a population of 382.[1] It was formed on February 3, 1777 from portions of Perth Amboy and Hackensack Township. The township was named for John Freehold (1636-1712), an Englishman who became proprietor of lands here in 1681. The first house built in Freehold Township was the one on Main Street which still stands today. Captain James Cook landed at Gravesend on April 12, 1745 while exploring what is now Long Island Sound and upon his return journey made landfall at Sandy Hook Bay near present-day Eastport. On October 6, 1749, with James Cook's ships anchored off Sandy Hook Bay and three small vessels accompanying them as part of an expedition under Rear Admiral William Howe to explore the Indian Coast,[2] freeholders from Perth Amboy laid claim to all that lay between Sandy Hook Bay and Cape May Point. Commodore Nicholas Wiswall claimed land east of cape may point but this claim too would be disputed by other freeholders until 1814 when it finally passed into public ownership by Act No. 9 of 1814 under Captain John Stevens’ leadership as trustee for the townships along with West Deptford Township[3][4][5]. At that time “freehold” could only refer to parcels within Townships 1 through 5 so it would not have included those lying east of cape may point[6]. During World War II Freehold served as a bombing range for Newark Airport located adjacent to its borders with Essex County; much later parts were annexed into Hoboken City limits making it one municipality sharing borders with two other municipalities. In 2001FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP BECAME A MUNICIPALITY UNDER NEW JERSEY LAW QUIZING FOR FORMATION OF A NEW TOWNHOOD IN THE AREA BETWEEN SHOREHAM AND EPSTEINVILLE FREEHOLD BEING THE LAST TO BE QUITMANNED FROM FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP AS PART OF THAT LAW'S EFFECTIVE DATE ON OCTOBER 1, 2001 It should be noted that prior to law changes there were no wards within Freehold Township apart from Borough which continued to function administratively independent thereof up until then despite having ward status according to New Jersey municipal law
Freehold was founded in 1675 by the Dutch. It was known as a place of great beauty, with sandy beaches and rolling hills. The local farmers grew crops and raised livestock, while the townspeople manufactured goods such as hatchets, nails and textiles. In 1834, Freehold became an incorporated municipality. The area around Freehold had been inhabited for centuries by Native Americans who hunted game and collected plants and fruits on their traditional hunting grounds. European settlers began arriving in greater numbers during the early 1800s, when land grants were issued to new landowners in what is now New Jersey. Many of these men were looking for sites to settle after experiencing harsh conditions in their native countries. In 1824, John Stevens offered 2 acres (1 km2) of land near present-day Freehold Township for $5 per acre (0.25 m2). The grant was made available to anyone who could show that he would build a home on it within five years. By 1830, over 200 people had responded to Stevens’ offer; however only 10% of them actually built homes or started businesses within the five years stipulated by the grant. In 1835, Union County was formed from part of Middlesex County; Freehold Township became a part of Union County as well. This change in government caused some tension among the residents of Freehold Township because they felt that they should have remained separate from Union County because they thought it wasn’t fair that their community should share so much wealth with others who had less talent or resources than they did. However, many people throughout New Jersey eventually came to believe that being part of one county helped make them more efficient at governing themselves and contributed to their overall success story as a community. By 1840, there were over 1,000 people living in Freehold Township; however few businesses had been established and most residents were still hunter-gatherers or subsistence farmers who grew crops and raised livestock primarily for their own needs rather than selling products or services.). In 1845, freeholders voted to form a school board which would provide education for all children between the ages of 6 months old and 12 years old within the township boundaries instead of sending them off to private schools like those located elsewhere in New Jersey . During this time period there also began efforts by some residents to sell property outside of township boundaries in orderto create more money flowing into the township coffers specifically through agriculture but these attempts ultimately failed due largely to lack of interest from buyers outside versus those inside the township limits
