Franklin Lakes is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Franklin Lakes comes from Samuel Franklin who platted the town in 1784 and named it for General George Washington. The first settlers were Germanic Protestants who came to this area in the mid-19th century looking for land to settle after escaping religious persecution in Germany. They built homes and churches and started a local school system that still operates today. In 1867, John Smeaton purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of the community from David Frankfort as part of his purchase of what is now Maplewood Township; he named it Franklin Lakes after his father-in-law's estate near Philadelphia. In 1868, he sold another parcel to Elisha Holmes for $2 per acre (0.084 hectares). In 1870, Representative Adam Clayton Powell Jr., one of New Jersey's two Senators from Harlem, bought 1,500 acres (500 hectares), northwest of Franklin Lakes proper but adjacent to Maplewood Township limits on behalf of an urban development project known as "The Great North Road." The township trustees voted not to sell him the land because they did not want their boundaries changed during the sale process; Powell donated it instead to Newark College for use as a research farm and agricultural training center known as Princeton Agricultural Institute (). In 1916, when Franklin Lakes became unincorporated due to lack of residents – its only settler at that time – it was merged with nearby Maplewood Township into what is now Middlesex County. On March 14th 1920 by order of then-Governor Woodrow Wilson Interstate Highway No. 7 was opened through both townships with alignments running northeast/southwest on present day Route 9W between them just south or east of where I-287 ends today; this marked what are now Routes 11A and 11B northbound/southbound while also providing access from Newark Airport northbound/southbound onto I-287

Franklin Lakes is located in the northwestern corner of New Jersey, just east of Trenton and west of Camden. The name comes from a stream that flows through the community. The first Europeans to visit Franklin Lakes were Dutch farmers in 1624. In 1821, Colonel John Stevens founded a log cabin here. In 1825, General Washington’s army passed through this area on their way to Battle of Princeton. The town was named for General George Washington, who died in 1799 at age 82 years old. After his death, his widow established a house here as her personal home. She used the property to develop Franklin Lakes into one of the most prosperous towns in New Jersey during the 1800s. The first post office was established in 1826 and called Milton Station because it was located near Milton, which then served as the town’s capital. When New York gained statehood in 1777, part of what is now Burlington County became part of New York State and Milton Station became Franklincksville (now known as East Brunswick). In 1827, Congress approved the creation of a new township within Middlesex County called Franklin Lakes and on November 3rd, 1830 its incorporation took place under the name “Franklin Lakes Township” with a population of 584 residents In 1839-1840 Major General David Hunter built Fort Hunter on an island along Bulls Head Creek about two miles northeast of present-day Franklin Lakes This fort served as an artillery battery for American forces during both world wars A post office was established at Franklincksville on October 15th 1840 by Samuel Freeman and continued until it closed on June 1st 1861 due to population growth thereabouts A mail route operated between Newark Liberty International Airport and Franklincksville from 1941 until 1975 when it was supplanted by Interstate 80 . Post offices have been closed all around northeastern NJ during this time period .
