Franklin Lakes is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Franklin Lakes" comes from General George Washington's Headquarters during the American Revolution on Monmouth Lake, just north of Franklin Lakes. The first coffee beans were roasted on property belonging to Nicholas Lorimer in 1793. In 1828, Elijah Woodruff founded the First Dutch Bros. Coffee and Tea Company in Franklin Lakes with his father-in-law Cornelius Sloat as president and Samuel Morse as secretary/ Treasurer. In 1892, John Fenton opened a grocery store in Franklin Lakes which became one of the largest retailers in the area until it closed its doors in 1914. In 1919, C&G Coffee & Tea Co., Inc., was established with Rufus Ewing as president and Harry Weisberger as secretary/treasurer. With over 100 locations throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania by 1928, C&G soon became one of America’s leading coffeehouses and remains so today. In 1971, Pabst Brewing Company purchased all assets of Dutch Bros./C&G Coffee & Tea Co., including their ill-fated stores on Broad Street across from Newark Penn Station Railroad Yards in Newark (renamed PABST Park Place). In 1977 Pabst merged with brewing company Anheuser Busch to form AnheuserBusch InBev.

Franklin Lakes is part of the Trenton–Ewing Township School District and ZIP Code 07608. The name "Franklin Lakes" comes from Nicholas Franklin who settled there in 1784. He was a member of the first township committee which organized Hunterdon County. In 1814, he donated land to form what is now Franklin Lakes Township. When Morris and Hunterdon Counties were combined to form Mercer County in 1839, Franklins' donation went along with it. The name changed again when Mercer County became Sussex County in 1908, but the village remains named for Nicholas Franklin even though its boundaries have changed several times since then. In 1960, three-quarters of all residents lived within one mile (1 km) of either side of Route 22 which forms NJ Transit's line between Trenton and Camden stations; that amount has gradually shrunk as commuting distance has increased for commuters travelling intoNJ Transit's larger metropolitan areas such as Newark Liberty International Airport or Elizabethtown/Belle Mead outside ofNJ Transit's service area According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of , all land. As of the census[10]of 2000, there were 5,521 people residing in the borough: 2% African American, 0% Native American, 96% White European American (81% male); 1% Asian Pacific Islander, 0% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; 3% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8%. Of note are 350 residents who are Puerto Rican citizens born in America mainland Puerto Rico

Franklin Lakes is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. The name of the borough comes from Franklin Township and Lakewood Avenue. The first settlers in Franklin Lakes were Dutch people who arrived in 1664. They called the area "Wijnaveldt" or "Weineweide". In 1814, two brothers named John and James McClanahan purchased land near what is now the intersection of Route 1 and Lakewood Avenue from Sir George Washington and Abram Hewitt for $1,000. They named their new tract "Franklin Lakes", after President George Washington's father-in-law, Benjamin Franklin. In 1838, Nicholas Werth built a small cabin on his farm between what is now Center Street and Euclid Road. Werth was an early settler in this part of Middlesex County. He operated a general store and tannery until his death in 1862. His daughter Annette continued to operate the business until her death in 1928. In 1892, steamboats brought passengers to Franklinsville Park from Asbury Park for picnics on their way to Atlantic City beach during summertime; today's Franklinsville Landing Historic District includes portions of that period of history. In 1907, the borough bought land along Main Street south of where it meets Route 1 from Colonel Edwin Stanton (the founder of Camden) for $10 per acre (the purchase price then being more than twice what it would be today). This expansion greatly increased the population as farmers moved into Franklin Lakes from all around southern New Jersey with hopes of finding cheap farmland thereabouts due to lack of suitable hunting grounds elsewhere within New Jersey during that time period."
