The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey was founded on December 15, 1938. The Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that provides support to the Coast Guard. The Auxiliary helps protect our coastline and waterways by providing security, education and assistance to the Coast Guard's personnel and units. The Auxiliary has been providing support to the Coast Guard for over 60 years! In 1938, the Auxiliary formed an order of merit which still exists today. The Order of Merit is an honorary award given to individuals who have contributed significant amounts to the Auxiliary through service or donations. Each year, we honor individuals with this award by conferring a medal on them at a ceremony held at our headquarters in Franklin Lakes. In addition to their ceremonial role as recipients of the Order of Merit, each recipient has also made a significant impact on behalf of the Auxiliary. Some examples include: Edward Jansen (1938-2009), who was appointed Commandant of Troopers in 1977; Harry Fenton (1939-2007), who served as Vice President from 1984-1996; Gerald Peele (1945-2012), who served as Commodore from 1992-2002; Donny Smith (1968-) serving as Captain since 2009; and Laurie Wexler (born October 14th, 1978) currently serving as First Lieutenant since 2016.

Franklin Lakes is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The town was formed from the merger of two small villages – Franklin and Westville – on July 1, 1871. At its peak in 1915, Franklin Lakes had a population of 5,269 people. The first post office was established in 1872. In 1927, Franklin Lakes became one of the townships within the new Monmouth County municipality; it remained an unincorporated community until 1955 when it became a full-time township under state laws. In 1959, Monmouth County abolished Township form and merged with Union County to form a single county with a population of 62,000 people; Franklin Lakes became an incorporated town within that county again on November 3rd of that year. As part of Newark's redevelopment project following World War II (1946-1948), many factories were closed or moved out as part of broader plans to modernize the cityscape and make it more CASEful (a term used to refer to American cities during the war years). The closure and relocation of these factories brought about significant job losses for local residents who did not have these jobs available outside their homes or communities elsewhere in Newark; this led some residents to move into Franklin Lakes as well as other nearby towns during this time period in order to maintain their homes and businesses while they awaited new employment opportunities or housing developments closer by. With steady postwar growth throughout much of America and New Jersey (particularly around Edison and Newark), unemployment rates began dropping starting in the early 1970s due largely to large numbers being hired by government agencies such as Veterans Administration hospitals or by suburban developers interested in creating high-density suburbs near major city centers across North America. This change also coincided with increased development along Route 9 through central Franklin Lakes which Highway 32 followed soon thereafter becoming known locally as "The Boulevard". As manufacturingjobs disappeared overall throughout New Jersey during this time period there were corresponding increases in prices for goods exported fromNJ/NY - making life difficult for many small businesses who could no longer afford compete against larger companies located outsideNJ/NY marketplaces
