Fort Lee was a small fort built in 1777 by the British to protect New Jersey from French and Indian attack. The fort was destroyed in 1814 by a combined American and French force, but it is still remembered for its defenders, who fought bravely against overwhelming odds. New Jersey has a rich history that can be traced back to the arrival of Europeans on the continent more than 500 years ago. One of the earliest European settlements was at Fort Lee, which was founded in 1777 by British forces to help protect New Jersey from French and Indian attack. The fort was destroyed in 1814 by an American and French force, but it is still remembered for its defenders, who fought bravely against overwhelming odds. The first permanent European settlement in what is now New Jersey was at Monmouth Junction, which arrived in 1686. By 1730, there were several hundred people living in what is now New Jersey; these pioneers began trading with Native Americans and building homes and businesses along the Delaware River. In 1777, Governor John Woolridge ordered Colonel James Clinton to build a small fort at Fort Lee to protect New York City from possible French attack. The fort served as a base of operations for various military campaigns throughout the winter of 1776-1777; it also functioned as a polling place for local elections. In addition to their defense duties at Fort Lee, the garrison also conducted trade with Native Americans and operated two mills located near present-day Elizabethtown (now part of Paterson). The early colonists were unable to farm properly so they relied heavily on hunting and fishing opportunities; however, this changed with improved farming techniques after contact with Europeans occurred. After France attacked America during the war of independence (known as the American Revolution), President George Washington ordered Colonel Clinton to erect a larger fortress known as West Point on Governors Island outside Manhattan within weeks of his inauguration on January 20, 1800. West Point soon becamethe outstanding military objective of America’s expanding frontier; accordingly, General Sir Charles Cornwallis ordered Clinton’s army under Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Arnold to besiege Fort Lee on October 14th – one week after Arnold had successfully defended West Point from an English assault! Although numerically superior because he lacked artillery support, Arnold nevertheless managed to repel Cornwallis’s forces almost singlehandedly while suffering only three killed or wounded! With this impressive accomplishment under his belt (and no knowledge whatsoever about how cannons functioned!), Arnold turned his attention towards Easton where he learned that Hessian troops had landed unannounced just upstream from Princeton! Unbeknownst to him at that time (!), Patriot militia under General Burgoyne were already besieging Princeton! Arnold therefore decided not only To Retreat But To Battle At Easton Which He did On November 3rd!!! This event would later become known as “The Battle Of Princeton”! Despite being outnumbered 2:1(!!), Captain John Duryea led 300 men against 1/3000 Hessians commanded by Count Bernadotte!!! Unfortunately for Captain Duryea & his team (or so he thought), they didn't have any armor nor even cannon fodder!!! They quickly lost fifty out of their 300 men & equipment when fencingWith bayonets !! Resulting In A Skirmish That Ended In A Draw!!! So pronounced By Our own historians!!!!!!!!!
